Worst "Innovations"

What features do you think were either really bad ideas or didn't work well when Implemented? I'm talking in paarticular about things taht the game company bragged about on the box, but turned out to merely slow things down with little benefit. For example, Legend of Mana pioneered the idea of placing locations on the world map. (FFTA used the same system).

This is not a FFTA discussion thread, It's a place to discuss features in games that didn't work, or took more from the game then they added. The map placing thing was merely an example.

I thought most of Chrono Cross's "innovations" were detrimental to the gameplay. I mean, it had the universal level system, which is a great idea and more RPGs should use it, but--you could only get levels after bosses. And it's been a long time since I played it, but I remember you getting shit from random battles, making them totally pointless. Then you had the no MP thing, but by the time you built up your magic levels (I forgot what they're called) enough to actually use spells in a random battle, it was over. HOWEVER, you could heal with your unused spells after battle, so you got free healing after every fight! It turned dungeons into even more of a joke than they already were. In most RPGs, you at least have to manage your MP so you don't run out of heals halfway through, which is the only thing that might make them less easy in a lot of modern games. And of course you had 50 billion party members, which is COOL and makes your party CUSTOMIZABLE, except they were all exactly the same save for their godawful accents, and you never saw 95% of them after they joined you because there was no large-scale mechanic to justify like their existence like I hear Suikoden has.

I didn't like that game. :(

what I thought all of chrono cross' innovations were magnificent
the healing thing made it easier to just get on with the damn game instead of rationing mp and potions to heal, and the level thing was inteligent too because you didnt have to grind in order to kill *insert boss*.

Most rpgs make you ration mp and shit because most rpgs suck.

I wouldn't have minded the healing thing if the battles weren't insanely easy. In fact, it coulda been a good idea if the game offered some challenge, but as it was, it just underscored the pointless monotony of CC's dungeons. You don't even have to think about when to heal, because it automatically prompts you for it, just like it automatically prompts you to pick the most effective attack strength, etc. You run through the entire dungeon mashing X and never have to stop, not even to look at your characters' HP, because the game makes sure you're never in danger of dying. I mean, sure, you mash X in other RPGs too, but at least having to ration your MP gives you something to think about. Couple that with the fact that you get jackshit for random battles, and CC's minor enemies are a complete waste of time.

That said, I really did like CC's party level system (and am, in fact, jacking it for my game), but the way they implemented it undermined the whole point of having random enemies. Legend of Dragoon has the same general idea with keeping you on track--the vast majority of your exp comes from bosses--but you still have to fight a lot to level up your attacks, and said attacks are fun and interactive.

And I never grind in RPGs anyway. Modern ones, at least, are easy enough as it is.

I wouldn't say CC's party level undermined the point of fighting random encounters. If you don't fight random encounters between new star levels, you will lose stats permanently. This goes for all characters. If you for example decide not to use Leena for a while and fight a few bosses, she has now lost stats that cannot be recovered. In order to give a character maximum stats, that one should between all acquirements of stars it's available fight enemies until it don't gains stats anymore.

I suspect a lot of people are not aware of that aspect of CC's status growth.

Making Shadow the Hedgehog exist was pretty much a horrible mistake within itself. Oh, and then giving the character a gun topped it off.

Fable's Dynamic and evolving world, they kindof dropped the ball abit there.
Fable 2 is gonna be much, much better, just to let you know. I was disappointed with the first Fable too, when they promised all these things. But F2 is gonna be bigger and better...or so they say! I'm taking their words for it.

Also......RPG Maker 3 for the PS2 was complete sh*t, possibly lower than sh*t....

2 Worlds for the 360 is fun, buuuut...horrible.

GTA IV had some MAJOR things taken out that when you play it at times..it just doesn't feel like a GTA game....

And now they gave Sonic a sword. xD

And made him a werewolf.

A fucking werewolf.

As if he wasn't furry enough.

Apparently Sega decided he wasn't furry enough....that's odd..a hedgehog to a werewolf....
and sonic was furry? He looked like he smothered himself with blue cement and spiked it around his back..then he spins in a rampage KO'ing anything he touches, all for small, invaluable rings.
.....if you ask me, Sega has been going downhill for a long time. How many people still talk about Sonic nowadays? And not just Sega, Nintendo has been ruining themselves too, I think it started when they made great platformers like Mario do stupid sports games.
