Word help

I'm sorry to bother you guys with a question, but I've searched it up and I can't seem to find an answer.

What is the deal with Lightning?

Every dictionary calls it a noun and a verb, as well as a adjective, which I already knew. My question involves a bit of help with a project I've been working on. Its not school work P).

Well, anyway, what is -- I guess this is the right word -- the "base" word for lightning? The reason I ask this, is because I've been following a book on how to create a simple, fun language to share with people and I've implemented a way to modify words.

But I can't seem to figure out how to go about creating a way to use this word. Following the book, I've created a way to make adjectives and verbs, even nouns. But lightning is all of them, so here is my question.

What shall I do? For a quick explanation of the system I've created, it uses suffixes to change the word into noun/verb/adjective. For this case, should I use all my modifiers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :heart:

well I wouldn't worry so much about the verb form because usually you need a modifier with lightning as a very

it began to lightning outside (but even then this sounds somewhat wonky)

Im pretty sure the base word is light with the suffix of -ning(though in terms of suffixes I am pretty sure -ning doesnt have a definite meaning)

In linguistics, gerund (abbreviated ) is a term used to refer to various non-finite verb forms in various languages: * As applied to English, it refers to the usage of a verb (in its -ing form) as a noun (for example, the verb "learning" in the sentence "Learning is an easy process for some"). ...

With that, I'm still a bit confused.

Let's say my suffix ending for verbs was "kaan" and my suffix for nouns was "buna" (xD) and let's just give the word a base word, "Lata" (Light?). Which should I use? Latabuna or Latakaan? :crazy: I'm thinking the verb suffix, but I'm not entirely sure. I've only just begun classes in Linguistics (which I'm enjoying so far lol)...

And if I use "Light" as the base word and the verb suffix, it would have another meaning other than "lightning", wouldn't it?

This is what's confusing me about my language. Everything is flawless, but then you get those few words... xD

how about making the word lata represent somethign that can be used with either buna or kaan, depending on contextual usage. language is not always strict and perfect about rules. english seems to abide by these rules more than say japanese or vietnamese.

then you would use both latakaan and latabuna depending on how you used it. At least that is what i would do. Sometimes we have a tendency to group a lot of words together when in fact, in other languages they differentiate between verbs and nouns more so than English.

Well, it is my language, so I can pick and choose rules and borrow rules or words Plus, this is the only "oopys" that I've come across. :P

Well, it does seem pretty flawless since I gave it no room to be flawed by making it basically really small, so there isn't much space for it to be flawed or have major problems or even have a chance of not function, since it is just a basic, simple language. :grin: Of course by flawless I know I can't achieve LOTR's perfection. I just meant in a sense of it working pretty great without seeing any big problems :D

I'm not quiet sure what you mean. Lata having multiple meanings? :smile:

Hmm, so if I used it as a verb, I'd used Latakaan and then for a noun, buna? Okay, then with that, I guess I would have to pay extra attention when it becomes the adjective form. The author of the book never mentioned anything regarding a bump like this xD

I had assumed Lightning was a shortening of "lightening".

There was a lightening. The sky shone with a lightening.

In this case it's light + ening, such as in quickening.
