Woman kills herself over a wii

I have never seen a warning label slapped on Water saying "Over-dosage / consumption may cause harm or potentially kill". It is really sad that she was doing it for her kids and just after christmas too.

Somehow, it wouldn't suprise me if they started appearing after this, (at least for brands that sell to the US)

I don't see how someone could drink that much water though - you can only fit so much in your stomach. Unless you drank gallons of it over the course of a few hours, giving your body time to absorb it. I dunno, this is the first time I've ever heard of water intoxication.

The contests was one bottle (500ml) every 15 minutes, so the capacity of the stomach would not be an issue here. (it would be empty in time for the next bottle)

It's usually only occurs in newborn babies (formula fed) or athletes (marathon runners in particular)

I can't think of a single person who would think, "Hmm, maybe we should have a doctor here, since people are drinking so much water."
If they thought enough to require a disclaimer to be signed, I'd like to see what the disclaimer said, if it addressed this specific contest, and was not a generic disclaimer they used for everything, then they certainly had thought of the risks involved.

The idea of expecting the radio station to have the obscure medical knowledge to have medics on hand for drinking water is obsurd.

Lucky you... One time, at a school-camp-thing(in elementary), I didn't urinate for 3 days(I detest public washrooms). Got really, really sick.

A friend of mine at school camp last year drunk loads of water, He was shaking/shivering for a while afterwards and said he was dizzy, I thought that was quite funny.

But I never thought anyone was stupid enough to drink to much water that it would kill them.

Funny, I can try to not urinate for days and remain fine. I guess it would be much harder for females (not implying that you are one!)

It's dependant on how much fluid you drink over x amount of days. Stagnation (not urinating frequently enough) can cause chronic kidney disease which means either one of your Kidneys will allow larger molecules to be found in the urine (not cool).

Not drinking any fluid over a long period of time causes Dehydration which has similar / same symptoms as Water Intoxication both of which can and most probably kill within weeks, maybe days or even hours.

According to the Sacramento Bee, a nurse practioiner and two coworkers "called the radio station on a speaker phone, and their comments that water intoxication can be dangerous were part of the broadcast." The DJ just asked them why didn't they join the contest and they replied "We don't want to die."

And Radio station fires 10 in wake of contestant's death (registration may be required to read)

Well they deserved it. I heard that the contestants were in a seperate room so therefore did not hear the warnings of any of the callers. I also heard the wavers that were signed waived the radio station of being responsible of any unforeseeable death.

This woman's death was not unforeseeable, if the DJs were well aware that what they were asking their contestants to do was dangerous. Therefore there's a pretty good chance that the radio station is going to get sued and have to pay money to the family she left behind.

Also, drinking too much water is like drinking too much alcohol. You get intoxicated and your mind is not in the right place. Would you continue to give a dangerously drunk person alcohol, even though they say they're okay and ask for more? Of course not, you'd know they're too drunk to realize they're putting themselves in danger of getting alcohol poisoning and dying from it. It's the same exact thing with water.

I think the DJs and the radio station were ignorant of the full effects of their contest. It was irresponsible of them and they deserve any punishment they got, imo.

Wait, did the warnings to the station get on the air? If they didnt, the jockies are liable for what happened right? Regaurdless of who's stupid idea it was to begin with, whoever decided to continue after finding out it was possibly fatal is to blame as well as whoever decided not to air these warnings to each of the contestants.

Well people go on Fear Factor when quite a few of their stunts are possibly fatal, but I think maybe the mindset is 'it's that if a TV show/radio is sponsoring this...how dangerous could it be thing?'
