Wireless Network

Ok, I'd been having major problems with my Internet and Network going down every few minutes, and having to reboot everything to get it work work.

So I moved ISP to Sky, from Virgin. Got a free new wireless router to go with it, a new IP address, new everything.

And still getting the same problems.

It's not on my laptop's end because my sister gets the same problem, i.e. the whole network goes down.

It's INCREDIBLY annoying.

Info:

Did have linksys 54mbps
I can't remember the details but it looked like this: http://www.zdnet.de/i/ar/mobile/superce ... wrt54g.jpg

Network cards all built-in laptop dealies.

Currently have whatever Sky ships, i.e. a broadband modem with built-in 54mbps wireless router.

There's an exterior wall between the router and me (extension), though I get the same issues if I sit in the extension.

There's a large business park across the road, idk if that would affect anything.

The router is also next to a power socket, idk if that would either.

The problems only started a few months ago but it's like really bad, going down at least once an hour. (At one point it was going off every few minutes)

Anyone have any ideas? Google didn't help.

Hmmm... I had the same problem for a few days in I think it was... January?

I'm not really sure, but I'd say try taking it away from the power socket first.

It could be one of many different issues. Interference from other devices could be causing it, especially if the industrial park is dealing with certain subject that involve electromagnetic waves, from irradiation in a canning plant to a full-out radio station. If this was the case, your neighbors would probably have the same issue. Another potential problem is that the cable leading into your house may be degrading, leading to partial connection. If this were the case, resetting the device would not work, and you'd have to wait for the cables to reconnect. Yet another issue is that multiple devices plugged into the same cable output (if you have the modem plugged into the same output from the wall as, say, a TV), and that removing the interfering device will solve the problem. For example, I have TV plugged into our cable line, that apparently will occasionally interfere with and disconnect my internet, despite the fact that it isn't technically using the same line as the internet, nor the same outlet or anything of the sort.

Sky just phoned me and said it's "trouble on their end" and they are "sorting it out".

I don't get how that explains the wireless going down or anything to with the router tbh, especially since this happened before Sky (and was the reason we got Sky).

There's an unprotected network around here, I could try connecting and seeing if I get the same errors I guess.

I'll try moving it into the actual house and away from plugs, and give it it's own socket, like you said something might be intefering there.

Also, I'm not sure if I explained it correctly or not, but, even if it has its own socket, something else connected might cause the problem. For example, if its hooked up to cable, and you have something else hooked up to cable, that something else might interfere, even if it is in a completely different room.

Had this same problem, I found the issue affected all computers, but only when a specific computer went online. Try connecting with just one computer at a time, and see if the problem still represents itself. If it works fine with no other computers on the network *you'll have to try this individually with each computer* you may have a network virus on one of your computers. That was the issue in my case, but you may have another issue so this might not find your problem at all. Anyway, it's worth a shot.
