WIP Faceset Art

That looks great. It looks like a more refined/sharper version of the picture in your sig.
I wouldn't have any problem playing your game if your art style remained constant throughout the whole game.

I'm glad it looks better!

Oh yes, less colors = much better. The hylight however could be modded up a bit. It seems kinda wide right now on the ponytail. You don't have to lose the length on the tips of it but don't leave such a large area of hylight in the middle if you know what I mean. Am I making sence? It's too late at night XD.

Anyways as for the art style it fits well with your sprites so I don't see why not. As long as you remain consistant, I don't think it should be a problem.

I agree with the less colors thing; I too think it's a lot better than from before....

as for the highlight thing, I do understand what you mean about the length being alright to leave, and I THINK I know what you're trying to say about the middle highlight; would I be correct to say that if I reduced the middle highlight a tad bit, ti would look a bit better?

Thanks again everyone for the time and input! Again, I cannot stress how helpful everyone's been!

Its starting to look much better in my opinon. I'm really liking this progress and i'm really looking forward to Chasing Citsuaki as well. Keep on it buddy.

Sweet, I think I've found something that works. I still got some anatomy issues (look closely at the scan compared to the colored to see what I mean, but I think it's coming together. Believe, I really want to release Chasing Citsuaki really bad, it's just it's a ton of work for a one man team y'know? I promise, however, I will try not to dissapoint!

This may be my last update on this thread for awhile seeing as I need to really start spriting again, but this is the beginnings of what will be a scene in the demo I'm planning to release. It's when Cella (the girl) officially joins Hayato on the beginning of his journey. Although he is somewhat reluctant, he let's her accompany him.

Completely done on MSPaint because I hate everything else (and I haven't installed paint.net yet lol)

Boobs are being shaded strangly. Right now they are shaded like two seperate circles on her chest... but boobs are not circle shaped but rather more pear shaped. Also when they are incased inside a shirt unless it's like desperatly tight there shouldn't be an area between the breasts like that. It should be one thick shadow that's dark for the under part of the breast. Take a quick glance at some anime picks of boobs in just a normal shirt and you'll see what I mean. Its looking good JD... I can't wait to see all the scenes depicted with your drawings.

Yeah I had some deal of trouble with her chest (and my girlfriend wouldn't--- erm n/m hehe.) AHEM anyways, they started off a lot smaller, but my intention was to have Tifa-esque boobs for Cella.... and I found that yes, like you said, the shading was oddly done. But I'm really glad it's kinda' working a lot better than what I used to do, and again I really appreciate all the help you've ever given me Raven! (You remember when I first made a spritesheet of her like last X-mas? You were the one who helped me learn the right way of shading, and thus stopped my pillow shading) But enough of that, I really do appreciate your efforts with my WIP's!

if we ignore the fact that Akira Toriyama, while its unique, has a very ugly way of drawing anime, there's still lots of things to be adressed... lets start from the top...

I'm using a tablet and photoshop which i am not at all acustomed to... so my skills are impaired, bare with me.

See the red stuff i faded out under that? That's called Under Structure. Do not be afraid to use it when drawing, 90% of all professional character artists do, and 100% of all cell animators do. It allows you to get a feeling for the parts of the body as a basic before you go doing details.

Now a few basic Structural things...

Only draw what you can see, if you can't see it, don't draw it. When you turn your head to the side, the ear facing away from the viewer is hidden. Don't draw it. Even if you feel you must draw it, you've got 1 ear that's almost in the right spot and another ear protruding from his neck. Top of the ear should be about eye level, bottom should be about nose level.

He has a pez neck. Meaning his neck just juts straight up into his head. The neck curves. Draw it as such, although i didn't do a good job illustrating that in my example =\

His shoulders don't align right. At the angle he's drawn, his neck and collar bone face one way and his shoulder mysteriously pops out and comes down to a full-front facing position. Keep your body parts aligned.

Ok building on what I said for the last one because i'm not repeating myself for the same mistakes..

No matter how cool you may think neck muscles are, a.) a guy with his build wouldn't have big ones and more importantly b.) they would never ever ever look like that. They would be much more sloping gradual and they would NNEEEVER make such a sharp angle when connecting with the rest of the shelf of the collar bone. If you insist on having long necks, don't do the DBZ bulging neck/shoulder muscles.

See the pony tail? no you don't because it's hidden by his neck. Dont' draw it. I know i said I wouldn't' repeat myself but, Don't draw it.

I failed to mention this before, but ears do not connect to the jaw line.

The body has Mass. Things have to fold around the body. This includes your arms. Your arms are connected to your shoulders. Once again your shoulders cannot magically twist around. So if you fold your arms, you have to wrap an arm around the body.

I didn't get into the hands right now because they more delicate and require a full explanation all their own. One i can't give w/ just my tablet, and I'm not at all in the mood to scan anything right now.

I hope this helps. Sorry if this is a little bit Necro-Posty, but as i was sweeping through posts... i just had to.

Edit: oh my loving mother there's more on page 2 and page 3 for me to mess with ><
I'll do that tomorrow I'm not up for anymore right now ~.~

Edit again: If you take your art even remotely seriously, NEVER draw on lined paper. it's a sin o.o get a decent sketch book or at least use printer paper. Nothing screams "i don't give a sh*t" like a note book drawing. Especially if you're using it for somethings serious o____o

I appreciate the tips Mascaprone, (forgive me if I took awhile to respond, believe me I'm not ignoring you, just busy with well... life lol.) I think you have a very good point about the neck muscles and how builds wouldn't have it bulging the way I draw them. I've went through a lot of my drawings and I do tend to have this recurring in many of my sketches. I do think that it doesn't look as good when I do it like that, I suppose that it's a habit I've grown accustomed to by drawing Dragonball characters when i was really young. Also your perspective notes are good to note as well, hopefully I can incorporate these both into my future works.

I don't think Toriyama's style is ugly per-se, I suppose that it works for some, and doesn't for others, eh? I do appreciate your honest opinion.

Note: just because I do some of my work on line art doesn't mean I don't take myself "seriously". That, my friend, is a fallacy. Hell, some people draw on the weirdest things and call it art, just because I tend to doodle in my notebook during lectures doesn't make me less serious, y'know? Just had to call that one out. ;)

But nit-picking aside, I do appreciate the time and help you've put into your advice; they will be put into thought with my future works.

its fine to doodle in your note books. The point is that you scanned a note book doodle as a piece of art work and presented it. that's where my grumpy is coming from. I'll get back to you on the standing stuff later.
