Winter Contest Projects - Discussion

Everyone is so ambitious. I'd like to make a winter project but then I think about my own project that I could be working on instead.  And then there's the resources I could be making. Or the requests I could be taking.

Can incomplete projects be submitted? It'd be like, "To Be Continued" "Next Christmas..." Dun dun duuuuun.

I think that it has to be a completed project.
My project revolves an odd story-line. Basically, the world has gone mad as something is melting all the snow. You, James, a 13-14 year old kid who doesn't like Christmas, is trying to stop it. The story revolves back and forth around you and the North Pole where (here it come kids) Santa, the jolly man himself, though he's lost some weight here, is too trying to solve this problem. Tons of mini-games are planned,

For James' Side there will be snowball fights, snowboarding, igloo building, snowman contests, and more
For Santa's Side there will be Present Making and things that I have not yet thought off.

The only problem for me right now is trying to get a cool Santa tileset along with his workshop. I may resort to just giving him a REALLY REALLY big house.

The grinch is also involved (haha).

Do you guys think you could give me some feedback on my logo? It of course looks a million times better on a darker background which I plan on doing. And yeah, it's in my sig too. I'm not the greatest with Photoshop, but I don't think it looks too bad.

Right now I'm still working on my game's plot and am starting to get some resources. I got a bunch of music yesterday. I actually think my chances are pretty good for this. :) (well, probably still not as good as most people's, but good for my standards at least)

This is a demo of the Sledding event from my Winter game (not an official contest entry)

A brief explanation. You will accelerate as you move down the hill. Going down an obvious slope will increase your speed faster than traveling normally. If you fall from a cliff edge, you are going to hit the ground hard and slow down. Traveling across grass, and other treacherous terrain is going to have adverse effects as well. Also, the ice/wet snow tiles are going to make you lose control of your sleigh. There are a lot of tricks to this. Essentially, I wouldn't be running into snowmen if I were you.

Dadevster: It looks very wintery. It may be a bit big to put on a background/splash for an RMXP game? I assume you've made it so it will scale well.

:straightthumb: this is actually really good, I got 19 seconds.

2 Things though (C & C! BEWARE!)
1) Why did you include over 70 songs in the demo
2) If you click to race again, you get an error.

Yeah, I made a version that can fit in a title screen, and an even smaller one for my signature.

Prexus, that was pretty cool! Did you make that with events? (I don't think so, as I got an error at the end when I tried to play again) It was a little hard to control, and a little awkward when I would go really fast then all of a sudden nearly stop. I imagine with a bit of tweaking it could be an awesome game.

You shouldn't get an error trying to race again, and the songs in the demo were just there. I didn't think the extra 1mb was such a big deal.

EDIT: Err. So it does give an error. Fixed and reuploaded. Same link.

It was done using Scripting, and things like the snowmen and the intro countdown were obviously done using events. Hybridizing Events and Scripting is the best way to do it.

Haha, Prexus that was fun. Where did you get such an awesome sledding template? I was going to do it at first, but I could never find one, so I switched to snowboarding.

Dadevster, I love the logo.

The sled and characters were, I think, made by Despain. If it wasn't Despain, it was Kaeru-sama. But they were made for me as a request last year, and I am pretty sure I was hounding both of them about it and can't remember who finished the request first. Des, can you correct me on this?

Hmm, I just edited my snowboarding thing because compared to yours, it was a bit dull.
Btw, I found a problem with yours. When you manage to speed up, the speed sometimes goes to fast and I lost control even though I wasn't on the slippery ice thing.

Started a new project for the contest. It's called Penguin & Polar Bear at the Winter Games. Here's a screen of the titescreen.

It probably won't win, but hey this contest is for fun!

006, it's nice and simple. I like it, although it may be too simple, if you know what I mean. Maybe try adding a sort of winter background instead of just plain white. (or whatever shade of grey you're using)

It seems a lot of people are doing mini-game based projects. It'll be interesting to seem them all.

Just posting some little screens from my project.

Watch out for spurts of steam from the nearby volcano.

Keep an eye on those platforms that move in and out of the mountain.

What makes them go in and out? We'll never know.

Nice job Bruno. I've always loved the good old fashioned rope swinging (hookshot from LoZ:WW ftw) and it looks nice. I see you edited the sprite as well. I think I may have found some inspiration.

Yeah, that too. Dejack: Christmas Jumper Version!

I'm officially entering this contest- but I'm taking my time with it.  We've got two months.
I have a question- can a developer and an artist enter as a team and split the prize?  (Not saying that's what's going on, just wondering.)

EDIT:  This is the wrong place for this, thought I was still in the other forum.  Just delete this post, swear, I'll drink caffiene before posting again.  Too sleepie...
