Windows Media Player GSoD

Every so often, as I'm watching a video in WMP, the video will turn green and the sound will continue to play.  This event occurs on every kind of video format, wma, avi, mpg, etc.  This is a very annoying issue because I have to restart WMP every time it happens.  I have semi-remedied this by turning off all hardware acceleration in the troubleshooting menu for my display driver.  However, I cannot play any video games when they are set like that.
What I am looking for is a solution that prevents this issue for occurring, while still enabling my games to be ran.  What I am not looking for is an alternate application to play my videos in, so don't link me to VLC or any other application.

WMP Version: 11.0.5721.5230
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: AMD Athalon XP 1700+
RAM: 768 MB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500

Thank you for any assistance you may provide.

I fail to see where you said it wasn't a codec issue, but w/e.

One of the (many) signs of a missing codec is a green screen, no matter what the file type is.

Have you tried to use other player to see if this still happens? Maybe it's just a WMP problem and you may have to reinstall it or something.

Edit: I just noticed the Green Screen of Death in your title, nice one.

Have you tried to change the Video acceleration in Tools --> options --> Performance if it's on "full" try moving it down to "none" and see what happens. If it's on "none" try moving it up too "full". It worked for me
