Will you be getting the H1N1 vaccine?

Please keep in mind that the last time swine flu shots were made, they greatly increased the chances of another rare neurological condition, Guillain-Barre syndrome. They still don't know what caused that, incidentally.

Erm

They still don't know what caused that, incidentally.

However there was a connection between the vaccine and the disease. 'They still don't know what caused that, incidentally' is just in reference to they don't know why the vaccine caused the disease. There was a link, though,

I was raised in Tchernobyl so I don't really need the vaccine anymore; I just leak the cold out.

So no. Definitely not; it'd be a waste of money.

idg what's the deal against human testing. at least we pay the guys.

hell, that's how my dad got through college

anyway, I probably won't atm. gimme a little more testing of that vaccine and then get back to me.

how much do labs typically pay

seriously i need money

i know before i said i didnt trust it but if im getting paid they can do whatever they want to me

how is it legal for them to pay me to inject me with unknown chemical substances but it's illegal for them to pay me to suck them off

because let me tell you it'd be a lot easier on me to just suck them off

barring aids, syphilis, etc

idr but it probably wasn't a whole lot. it was mostly date money etc

maybe science has advanced along with the payroll though

and you never know it could wind up giving you superpowers

We'll have a little shack in a nice acre o' land and
Live off the fatta' the land

/ Tell about the alfalfa and the rabbits

Well, we'll grow a little patch of alfalfa and keep some rabbits in a hutch
Feed them on the alfalfa

/ And and I get to tend the rabbits

Yes, you get to tend the rabbits

In the winter we'll light a fire and put up our feet and we won't have to work for no-one

mostly from what i'm seeing, mostly all of them only offer to do it for free
whee i get to lose a day of work and get injected with unknown shit gratis, thanks guys

no. it's just influenza, a few antibiotics and a few days later, and you're fine. I don't want to risk what isn't well tested.

Antibiotics are for bacterial diseases. Not only is it a waste of time to give them to someone with a cold or the flu (they're both viral), but it helps contribute to drug resistant strains of bacteria cropping up and multiplying.

ven you dont have to be injected with shit :x
you can do all kinds of studies; my girlfriend did one on sleep. all you had to do was not sleep for 48 hours, answer some questions, etc. it's pretty boring stuff but you're paid to do it.

if you wander on a campus you'll find tons of ads for studies.

how much did she get for it? i actually need to do sleep studies anyway because of my narcolepsy/epileptic condition but i can't afford them

so, I just got off the phone with my dad (who is a doctor) and I think I'm gonna get it

there is admittedly a chance of the shot causing Guillain-Barre syndrome, but the chances are absolutely minute; literally to the tone of one in a million. compare that with H1N1's roughly 1 in 10 mortality rate and any given person's 1 in 3 chance of contracting the disease, and uh

do the math

additionally, one of the big worries regarding the shot is that it uses an adulant known as squalene, which many people are painting as a dangerous chemical which has yet to receive the FDA's explicit approval. the fact is, however, that squalene is produced by the human body in countable amounts, and the volume of squalene in any given shot will not tip that balance. for those of you who are pussies, though, they're coming out with a version in a week or so that does not contain squalene. this might be a legitimate alternative for those concerned about their fish allergies, because the squalene for these shots is extracted from the livers of sharks. not sure if that'd actually be a problem for someone with a fish allergy, but whatever.

another thing to note is that no one is releasing the actual numbers of those who've died of H1N1. the government is greatly understating the death counts, presumably in an effort to prevent panic (which has taken a little too well, if you ask me,) and reading newspaper headlines and online statistics will do you no good. as an insider in the medical industry, my dad's been keeping me posted on this. just to give you an idea, back when Alberta's official number of H1N1 deaths was 2, the actual count was 43.

so uh

I was already disgusted at you people who just said "I don't like needles" and left it at that, but for those of you who've actually heard things, the statistics are still in favour of getting the shot.

especially considering how few people actually are. you can't rely on everyone else being vaccinated and simply protecting you from exposure. in a class of around eighty people around four were actually considering getting the shot, three of them because they were getting forced.

and two of those eighty, statistically speaking, will die.

but of those who passed, how many were old/had immuno deficiencies/were extremely poor and couldn't afford medical care/were children?

young adults who are of normal weight and who are healthy and have no immuno-problems and who can visit a doctor if needed should be fine. immunizations for influenza strains typically only last for about a year or less, so you're not really safeguarding yourself against problems in the future, such as with tetanus or polio immunizations. all immunizations come with a risk of experiencing minor onsets of the illness you're being immunized against, and in some areas, the illness isn't very prevalent at all. Here, I've only heard of about 10 cases, total, in a city with a population of ~1.5M.

i'm just saying, it's not really worth it to freak out over and run to a still very new immunization shot for most people. if you're worried, then yeah, get it. but i'm just not.

and way more people die of the regular flu every year--and the only people who regularly get flu shots every year are old people, kids, and social workers.

young adults are in fact at high risk from this. two of them just passed this week where my dad works. before you ask, the healthcare in this province is exceptional.

besides, in a year the shit'll have probably passed over anyway. I don't see any merit to avoiding something simply because it's temporary.

"still very new" doesn't hold a lot of weight with me anymore, since new iterations of the vaccine are coming out very shortly and they're apparently keeping on top of the shortcomings.

I'm glad you actually took out the time to dig up some facts, mawk. Impressive!

Going by anecdotal evidence, though, I've talked to some people who already had the swine flu, and according to them (which is admittedly anecdotal), it's nothing really to worry about. I asked my friend how his experience with the H1N1, and he was just shrugged and said "eh".

I don't think subjective severity of the symptoms is a good measure of practically anything. diseases don't have to make everyone afflicted feel like death to actually be deadly.

I understand that. That's why I was just chipping in with some anecdotal statements. Hmm, I still think I'm not going to get the vaccine. I just don't really see it.
