so, I just got off the phone with my dad (who is a doctor) and I think I'm gonna get it
there is admittedly a chance of the shot causing Guillain-Barre syndrome, but the chances are absolutely minute; literally to the tone of one in a million. compare that with H1N1's roughly 1 in 10 mortality rate and any given person's 1 in 3 chance of contracting the disease, and uh
do the math
additionally, one of the big worries regarding the shot is that it uses an adulant known as squalene, which many people are painting as a dangerous chemical which has yet to receive the FDA's explicit approval. the fact is, however, that squalene is produced by the human body in countable amounts, and the volume of squalene in any given shot will not tip that balance. for those of you who are pussies, though, they're coming out with a version in a week or so that does not contain squalene. this might be a legitimate alternative for those concerned about their fish allergies, because the squalene for these shots is extracted from the livers of sharks. not sure if that'd actually be a problem for someone with a fish allergy, but whatever.
another thing to note is that no one is releasing the actual numbers of those who've died of H1N1. the government is greatly understating the death counts, presumably in an effort to prevent panic (which has taken a little too well, if you ask me,) and reading newspaper headlines and online statistics will do you no good. as an insider in the medical industry, my dad's been keeping me posted on this. just to give you an idea, back when Alberta's official number of H1N1 deaths was 2, the actual count was 43.
so uh
I was already disgusted at you people who just said "I don't like needles" and left it at that, but for those of you who've actually heard things, the statistics are still in favour of getting the shot.
especially considering how few people actually are. you can't rely on everyone else being vaccinated and simply protecting you from exposure. in a class of around eighty people around four were actually considering getting the shot, three of them because they were getting forced.
and two of those eighty, statistically speaking, will die.
