Why do I always like the villian?

Perhaps this is just me, but I've noticed a trend. Almost every time there's a good character, or a usable character, that goes bad later on.... Well, let me try to give an example or two.

The following spoiler actually has a spoiler if you haven't played Star Ocean: The Last Hope, yet.

Let's take Faize, for example. Loved his character, personality, etc. I used him the second he joined the party and used him 99% of the time during battle. I became used to his weapon style and his skills. I even favored him in terms of equipping accessories. Turns out, he leaves the party permanently about halfway through the game.

That's just sick. I mean, sure, you get Arumat instead, but.... It's not the same!

This isn't as major, but look at Soul Calibur. I like Raphael the most, and turns out he's evil. What's up with that?

Shadow Hearts: Covenant. I liked Nicolai's character. Him? Yes, he's "evil".

Chrono Cross. I liked Lynx and Harle. Even though they're playable, they're technically on the bad side for the first part.

There's a few more, but none are coming to mind at the moment.

Does this happen to anyone else?

well eugmhh .

I can imagin Raphael he was my favorite to (untile SC4 where almost all his moves where send over to amy) But he always was the bad guy , he has never been the good guy . So what you say over god guy leaving isn't really directed at him .

For Nicolai , man I hoped whole the game you would get him on your team .. But after the fight against Astaroth it was pretty sure you'd never get him on your team  , Though again , you can't really see his usefullness , becuase he was only useable for a short time .

Personaly I liked vayne from FFXII , though he was evil from the beginning . His personalety was pretty cool .
Same goes for Kefka (wel kefka is epic ..) .

For the later games I guess there making the bad guys better , or so good you just start to likethem . :thumb:

I never got a chance to play Final Fantasy IX. Did I miss out on something big?

I do like the Black Mages version of "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", though.

I feel like I'm definitely missing out now. I've only played Final Fantasies 1, 2, 7, 8, 10, 10-2, and 12.

So 6 was the best, eh? I'll have to check it out then.

In personal experience (many will denie it):

best: 6
Good ff: 1,3,4,5,9,X
bad ff : 2,7,X-2,XII
Horrible ff: 8

I never played 11 so i can't place it .

how the hell did this become "what ff is the best lol"

Anyway heroes are almost always more bland and uninteresting than the villains.

Villains:
- You spend less time with them so they're more "mysterious".
- They're usually badasses with a chip on their shoulders. And everyone loves them. Except when travelling alone in dark alleys.
- They frequently have mental issues, giving them more flavor.
- They, unlike the hero (in most cases), can die. This invisible affirmation adds suspense.
- Like Arb said, they frequently have the best lines, or more interesting things to say.

Heroes:
- You spend all your time with them, so you get used to them.
- They typically are corny/goody-goody/overly-badass-to-the-point-of-being-corny/too quiet/too annoying
- They are usually on the straight-and-narrow, which is boring. And anti-heroes have become hackneyed.
- Unless you're watching something artistic, chances are, the hero's not going anywhere. So that "omg will he die?!" suspense is gone.
- They usually only say what's already obvious to the viewer.

Lol you pretty much nailed it.

The only main characters that I've liked enough to be memorable...
RikkuFFX, Lulu, Yuna...Prishe.

The morally wrong/mysterious characters do happen to indeed be the most interesting to me. Though honestly I don't like any Final Fantasy villain 'cause they're all cliché and boring (at least the ones I've played). And..I don't really play any other games. So.

O wait, that guy with the laugh SE was interesting. And that big queen thing from FF9 (?). But other than that they're usually your run of the mill tall long haired bois.
