What would be good for my game?

If this isn't in the right section, please have a mod move it to the right spot, but on to my question.  I am thinking about making a game with dragon breeding mechanics like those present in Bahamut Lagoon for the SNES, but what scripts would work well, and would events work better for what I'm trying to do?  Also, I would prefer to use RPG Maker XP for this, and I don't want to use a tactical battling system.  If you have any sugestions, please say them, I will take anything!

I'd say you should be somewhere in project discussion, or near the concept thread.

Anyway...  I've never played Bahamut Lagoon, but dragon breeding sounds awesome!  I think whether you use scripts or eventing or a mixture of both is totally up to your knowledge of XP.  If you've had some heavy eventing experience, then you'd probably be alright using them for the dragon breeding, depending on how in-depth you wanted to go.  If you wanted to be able to make over 30 different combinations, you'd be best to check out some scripts.  As for the battle system, what kind are you looking for?  Obviously you want dragons incorporated into it, unless they're used primarily for travel in your game, but you'll probably want to avoid an ABS, unless you plan on using really large maps.  I'd say it would be tough to battle with a dragon in an ABS though due to the lack of next-gen gameplay XP provides.

So turnbased is the way I'd go.  That way you could use different actors for your dragon, you, and you ON your dragon, switching between them, or using a summon system (script or event-based) to call your dragon.  It seems that if you use a turn-based system, you can work a lot harder on your storyline and maps without worrying so much about the ABS.  (A problem I'm beginning to have in my project.)

Either way, keep this updated because I'd love to see what kind of ideas you've got going for the game.  And when the basics are down and you've got a few maps, open a project thread on it.

Thanks alot man, that was the encouragement I needed to make the game!  But anyway, I was thinking more of a ATB, but turn based would be fine since it is my first game.  As for dragon breeding, I was thinking something like, for example: you feed your dragon items which boost their stats (and trigger an event which increases a variable) and with certain combinations of variable counts the dragon will transform, giving it a a stat boost as well, all depending on the type of dragon you get.  As for summoning, I might put it in if the script that I found does what I need it to do; if not then the dragons will just be part of your party and I will allow you to switch them out at will.  As for my RMXP experience, I am better at eventing than scripting.  In fact, I have zero scripting knowlegde!  But I do like the idea of using dragons as transportation.  I would go with like a Dragon Warrior Monsters-type breeding, but I am not a spriter by any means, plus there really aren't any worth while combinations of dragons...  I will try to get something good whipped up and put on the project dicussion thread over Thanksgiving Vacation and try to make this a project that I actually complete!  Honestly, I think that the very friendly and helpful people such as you that are on these forums will keep me going with my games. :thumb:

EDIT:  Crap, I meant to say that I was thinking of a Real-time battling system, like in Final Fantasy VI. :dead:  Sorry for the confusion...

Of course.  This really does sound awesome, though.  I've played a lot of games here on RMXP.org and I have never seen anything quite like what you're describing.  Depending on your storyline, this could be very good.  And if you need any help, I'm always here to lend a hand.  I have no scripting knowledge either, to be honest.  But I can event up a storm when I put my mind to it.  What kinds of dragons would be available, and what kinds of items would be available for what combinations?  These are the things that will build the excitement of the game.  I'd love to hear more on this.  And good luck choosing a battle system.  That's definitely one of the most difficult decisions in the design process.

EDIT:  Oh.  And as your first game, I'm impressed that you've thought through this so much and haven't just posted about how you've created the perfect game with everything in it.  (I did something like that.)  It's best to start small, with something you know you can handle, and work up to your masterpiece.  When you've got a pretty good design, history, plot, characters, and features list, make a thread in the project development forum.  You'll get critiques on what you have so far, and if you listen to the critics, your game will be a hit with plenty of fans before you know it.

Thanks, I will be working on it for quite a while.  I found the sprites I needed for it, but I need to convert all 60 (or so) of them so they will work with RMXP.  As for the story, I was thinking...well, let's just save that for project dicussion. ;)  I will say this, at the begining of the game you have a choice between 2 base types of dragons, and it's going to be turn-based, as to not have any conflicts in scripts, which I have had many times before.  The story is going to have many twists and hopefully in the end it will all make sense.  As for now I am working on the first map.  I got busy today so I didn't have that much time to do it, plus I am not that fast at making maps.  I suppose I should take notes on what to add to previous sections of the game to go along with the plot.  Thanks again for the encouragement!

EDIT:  Just now got done converting the sprites.  Took me only 30 mins lol.  Tomorrow I am going to work on the rest of the game.

Hey man, I've been out for Thanksgiving week and now I'm back.  I see you've been busy also.

I'm glad to hear that you're going for it now, and I'm excited to see the first screenshots and the next update, so keep in touch, even if it's through pm's.  And as for the two base choices, that's an excellent idea.  Can't wait to play!

Why is Pikachu fighting a ghost?  Why is this map mapped sooo terribly?  And why did you post this?  If you read the thread, you'd know that he decided on a turnbased system.

!?  *Raises eyebrow in question*

Do you mean real time as in this:

If so, you need an ABS. That one is Blizz-ABS.

The shot is from a game im making, kinda like a mix up like Brawl.

Like Mikee said, I decided on a turn-based system, but I may end up changing it to time-based, such as this:

Sorry for crap quality, I just took the first one I found. =o  Sero, if you want to see my project then keep checking the project dicussion boards for my project, Dragon Breeders: Omen of the Dark.  Same with you, Mikee. =)  And I agree with Mikee, why did you post this on here and not on your own thread? =o
