[VX] Variables in battle?

I've now tried many times to make skills that call comment events where variables are used. However, when I test them, they never work. Are variables not checked when in battle? If so, this sucks. I could potentially use conditional branches, but that'd take FOREVER.

Let's say I start out by making a certain variable be equivalent to a character's level. I then multiply that variable by the number of a particular item in the inventory.

My problem is that the variable doesn't multiply.
