8.digital pokemon
7.butt kicker
6.naked woman in my bathtub!!
5.I THINK to LOUD!!!
4.get the hell out of my face!
3.losers believe everything we say to them
2.stop writing so much
1.I suck(Go DX)
thats my top ten real games(no kidding....).

First at all, the only one with good taste here is Rhazdel (Sorry guys lol)
And here my top tens:

1.Prince of Persia: SNes, a classic, amazing graphics for that time, thye music gave lot of depth, controls were perfect.
2.Wipeout XL: PS1 classic, psygnosis greatest game, fast, furious, bestial, did I mention it was fast?, adrenalin rushing, music by The Prodigy, Fluke, Future Sound Of London, Photek, WHAT A GAME!!
3.Chrono Trigger: This one was simply perfect for it's time, 'nuff said.
4.Final fantasy III: This one and FF VI are the only ones that are good in the series, (my apologies to you obsessed Final Fantasy fans lol)
5.ICO: Why? Simply because is one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen.
6.Vagrant Story: The dungeons are simply amazing, the atmosphere it's quite enticing and gloomy, the enemies are great, the bosses are bestial, the puzzles are head banging, sole problem, the main character looks gay lol
7.Resident Evil 2: The best one, since the first one was quite repetitive, this one was a great change in the beginning of the series. A must have.
8.Lost Vikings 2: Snes, funny, puzzle crazed, good music, lots of levels.
9.Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain: Now, to all of you who only played those depraved versions made by Eidos, pleassssse, if you ever bought one of those games, THROW IT!!! and get this Psx classic!!!! Mature game, history is simply amazing, voice actors are freaky, game play is great, although I prefer the pc version, (Less loading times).
10.Demon's Crest: Snes, Capcom, typical platform game, great music, difficult game, I don't know why I love it but I simply do lol

Now why I didn't mention any of those new trendy RPG games? well, because they are quite repetitive, always the same history about a young guy who is supposed to save the world!, quite trendy in fact. Honestly, I don't see any good changes for most games lately, if you want good games, check Too Human, by Silicon Knights, same little team that did the original Legacy of Kain. Also check old rpgs like Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, I know they don't have gorgeous graphics like newer games, but the plot was quite better.
*I didn't mention any Castlevania games because although I love the series, they aren't innovative enough, also didn't include Doom, but if you ask me, the best Doom ever done was Doom 64, (I know, no one is gonna agree in that one), Also didn't mention Zelda because, Zelda is a classic, obviously.
Also there is Super Metroid, which was basically a rip out of Draconus, game for Atari. if you take a closer llo at it you'll see the same kind of graphics. Of course Super Metroid added some stuff but anyway, still a copy.
Then, to finish, please, whenever you see an Ubisoft game, puke, since all they have done since their beginning is copying other games.
Also God of War, ewww, never seen such a game, bad, bad and bad... what a rip off!!!!. The newer Final Fantasy, please, c'mon, was that a joke? ok, if I wanna see a movie I'll go see one, I don't want a game to be a movie though.
Star Ocean: At the end of time... meh, wasn't that bad?
How comes no one mentioned Y's Ark of naphistim?? That was an old school RPG. Actually I forgot to mention lot of games, like Thief II, The Longest Journey, etc etc.

I'll take it in this order...

So there isn't one interesting RPG that's come out in the last 7 years then? I can sure as hell name a couple that aren't simply about a "young guy who's supposed to save the world". Examples?

Fable
Xenosaga
Namco X Capcom
Disgaea
Phantom Brave

I'd continue, but the list is long.

NEXT:
I don't know much about Atari games, but weren't they blatant rip-offs of other games? Or maybe it was something else....I dunno.

NEXT:
Rayman: Raving Rabids.
Splinter Cell

NEXT:
What's so bad about God of War? It's a fun action game, with an interesting take on Greek Mythology, pretty fun gameplay rivaling Devil May Cry, and a story that actually doesn't make me wanna rewrite the script.

Now, what I basically get from your post, you think nearly all newer games suck, while old ones are infinitely better. Am I wrong?

Edit:Also, Rhazdel, I'm kinda jealous that you can play Elder Scrolls IV on your PC....can you tell me it's improvements over Morrowind?

Hmm...

Final Fantasy IX
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
LoZ: Twilight Princess
Half-Life 2
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Final Fantasy I
Super Mario Bros. 3
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Starcraft
Master of the Wind

Not necessarily in that order, exactly.

Wow, Sometimes I think some people have never tried another genre except RPG :P
Probably not, anyways, to the point!

1. Final Fantasy VII - Shush, nothing can beat it! :D
2. World of Warcraft - I can't tell you how addicted I am.. .or rather was
3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - I know, RPG...
4. Gears of War - HA! Chainsawing Locust <3
5. Half-Life 2 - Shooting up combine is also very fun!
6. Rainbow 6 Vegas - Classy realistic shooter, T-Hunts.. so hard!
7. SourceForts - HL2 Mod. IT COUNTS.
8. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Who doesn't love it?
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - ITS FOOTBALL DAMMIT!!!
10. Final Fantasy XII - Instant Classic ;)

I never said newer games sucks, I just said newer rpgs suck lol
That's way different. Now, concerning God of War, let's put it simple, greek mythology, lots of killing, and there you go, big seller no?
Oh and Xenosaga? *Yawns*, and honestly Fable lol.... who are you kidding??
Now if you name good games like Shadow of the Colossus, ok, that's a great newer game. You have to admit it, most rpgs are kind of the same, same type of characters and history, same pattern you know? that's why they sell so much, and that's exactly why nowadays we use rpg maker to make rpgs, because they are a big market. And in order to maintain the profits this market got to offer a product that you like and you wanna play. That's the same reason why games aren't as difficult as before, because then they wouldn't sell as much. Today games got to be "user friendly"
Of course if you say Atari games were rip off... rip off of what may I ask? lol
So Prince of Persia, the first one was a rip off? A rip off of what??
Now don't assume I said newer games suck, but let's face it, now that the market considerably grew up, there's not much space for great games.
Well, also depends on what you consider great. if some fucked up action like par exemple Splinter Cell... ok fun game, but you know? Actually Ubisoft is really good at just copying games, like Alon D'Ar, wasn't that game just like Summoner? And what about Grandia? God, that was ugly... A game like Splinter Cell is very profitable for Ubisoft, just like Hitman does it for Eidos, since they don't bring up much good games.
of course in the past there was bad games, there will always be, that's for sure.
Anyway, I can't help it if you got bad taste *Oops* lol

Newer RPGs suck?
I think not!

We've got excellent games! Look at LoZ: Twilight Princess, FFXII, Oblivion etc.
They are getting better IMO.

1. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

Breath of Fire III (PS1)
The Sims (PC)

Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)

Currently my top ten are:

1) Final Fantasy IX
2) Kingdom hearts 1/2
3) Full metal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy
4) Boktai 2 Solar Boy Django
5) Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker
6) Final Fantasy X-2
7) Final Fantasy X
8) .hack//INFECTION//MUTATION//OUTBREAK//QUARENTINE
9) Final Fantasy XIII
10) Dirge Of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VIII

But they change on a regular Basis :p

Seems like no one will ever name the first Zelda, now that's a great game,
what about Draconus, Montezuma, Final Fantasy III, Act Raiser II, Chakan,
etc, of course you couldn't know a lot of newer games are barely remakes with better graphics.
I was recently playing Tales of the Abyss, (I have tried most of the newest rpgs, in fact wasn't that difficult to finish them), the game is basically a typical rpg, but with better (fancy graphics), the intro music reminds me a video clip for teenagers, so I guess that's what you call a great game isn't it?.
If you read some articles you will realize many people working in the video game industry think like me.
Oh, a good game was Okami, weird, no one mentioned it either. Or Shadow of the Colossus, ICO anyone? Y's Ark of Naphistim??

I hate to say it to get your hopes up, but yes. It stands head and shoulders above Morrowind.

The graphics are amazing, the voice actors are superb (they have Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean as voice actors!) and the gameplay is even more immersing and open than Morrowind.

I have Morrowind for the XBox, and the battle system and enemy AI needed major improvements, and Oblivion provided them. Combat is nearly flawless and AI is much better.

The only downside:

If you were a big fan of Kahjit, Argonian or Imperials, they have been made pretty useless in Oblivion. You can still play them, but their skill bonuses and stats are far worse than the other races.

I know they released Oblivion for the XBox 360, if your PC can't run it.

1) Final Fantasy VII+VIII (A tie, sorry) (PS)
2) Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)
3) Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (GC)
4) Tales of Symphonia (GC)
5) Tales of the Abyss (PS2)
6) Chrono Cross (PS)
7) Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2)
8) Legend of Dragoon (PS)
9) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
10) Resident Evil 4 (GC)

I have more, but that fills up the list and thats what comes to mind, haha. I cant really say thats the right order either. I really have to buckle down and make a rating system to figure out what order all my favorite games go in...

You mention Hitman, and you say I have bad taste? First of all, I was infact talking about RPGs. Second, I have to agree with Draken and say that they ARE getting better. And you assume every RPG nowadays sucks? Face it, ALL, and I mean ALL of the RPGs of yesteryear have the same kind of story. Just cause it's got a shiney look and a "different" battle system, doesn't mean it's bad. I say this, since you mentioned Tales of the Abyss, one of my favorite RPGs on the PS2. All stories are cliched dude, especially the older ones. There isn't a way to be "un-cliche" anymore (Unless you're the maker of Katamari Damacy....*cough*). It's the way they are presented that is interesting. Would I play Tales of if it had the same old turn based system as Final Fantasy VII? Hell no. It's about what's actually in the game, rather then the lore.

Btw, you seem to be basing you're judgment on God of War on the fact that it's popular. NEWS FLASH! POPULAR ISN'T BAD. Zelda's popular, so it must automatically suck, right? So is Disgaea....OR HECK, even Final Fantasy XII! Look, you can't base judgment on a game just because of a few bad aspects.
They are infact becoming good enough to be accepted by the general public, which is a great leap considering video games used to be a geek-only thing.

Actually video games are just being "popularized" and most old rpgs or even games were the same? well, give me a full detailed list of how many old games you ever played and then maybe we could agree that they were all the same.
Also, nowadays game companies could make better games, don't you agree, just check Shadows of the Colossus, now don't tell me that was a bad game, since it 's one of the most impressive looking games of the last two years.
But most companies keep using the same recipe, like par example, lack of movement, same type of menus and game systems. Nothing new.
I never said it was better way back. I said we had the feeling it was way more original. I've been a gamer since 1983, you got no idea how many games I played, starting in the first puters, and even Atari 2600, 800 XL, 1100, Commodore 64, etc. Ok ok, I know, that's old so it's bad, no? well, many games were directly taken from there, except they were "actualized". Like Prince of Persia, not bad. honestly, but it was merely a money making game and not really done for the fans of the original game. Now, saying EVERY single new rpg is much better, that's too much. That's impossible, since even in the past they weren't all good. Drakengard 2 was horrible and mostly a copy of Drakan: The Ancients Gates game, except the last one was much better even if it was "older". What about Musashi Samurai Legends, that was horrible, or Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask, or even Suikoden IV, remember Shining Tears? meh, so bad, and Romancing Saga?? lol, or even the Hack sign series, ok, now that was awful, sorry, but that's the way it is. Oh, and Unlimited Saga, overrated isn't it? Also Metal Saga, (just mesmerizing the torture I went through when playing that game makes me sick lol), And The nightmare of Druaga... ok I'll stop, but now don't tell me all the new games rock. Unlimited Saga comes from and old game, metal saga was a remix of another old game, same idea as the nightmare of Druaga which comes from a game called Fushigi no dungeon, actually it was a very old game, also appeared on a japanese snes game never released in usa, and in a N64 game, both of them much better than the ps2 version brought by Capcom.
Hack sign and Inuyasha, the living proof animation shouldn't becomes games, (Have you tried Ghost in the Shell SAC or even Cowboy Bebop???) I love those series but the games were simply awful, (both games made by Bandai, same company that worked in Tales? *hint* *hint* hehehe... Well, and Final Fantasy XII, the X2 was hilarious, for a comedy it was great, as a game, oh la la my poor lil' heart. So, as I was saying, FF XII, *ahem* I got the "vagrant storyish" feeling from it you know? I mean, you can hit, (no defense??? even prince of Persia could defend himself, ah wait, this is a new age rpg so I suppose defending yourself could be taken as "girly" no?) Also, well, those lines, red and blue were useless, (I went directly to the menu and got rid of them, never used them and finish the game that way, how happy I'm now :) )
The character was simply annoying, with that girly face and trendy clothes, the enemies were boring, were are the puzzles gone?? Guess they used all the game budget money on the voice actors :p )
'nuff said

Peace

Sincerely yours...

Let's all hug and get along, k?

1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Zelda: Twilight Princess
3. Final Fantasy 8
4. Final Fantasy 7 (Yes, 8 is better in my book. Feel free to gasp, or pass out or whatever.)
5. Kingdom Hearts
6. Final Fantasy 10
7. Kingdom Hearts II
8. Final Fantasy XII
9. Legend of Dragoon
10. Gears of War. While it is totally out of place on my list, I had to have *something* that wasn't an RPG, and this game just happens to be gorgeous. And honestly, what's sexier than a huge gun with a chainsaw?

Never, at a SINGLE point did I say all new games rock. Quite the contrary actually. There is a LOT of crap nowadays, but don't simply dismiss all of the newer games as bad.

Anyways, a lot of your defense seems to stem from the fact that all games are, of course, rip-offs. Well, I'll put this bluntly.

NO DUH!

It's pretty damn obvious that games today are based off of older games, because there isn't many new ideas left. I can name at least 6 games based off of FF, and about 20 based of Mario. Does it make them all bad? No. It simply uses a formula that other games followed and adds on to it.

And you do realize the very first RPGs were based off of Dungeons and Dragons....right? So they technically stole from that formula, which you presume was stolen by a lot of newer games.

Isn't the idea stole the problem, but the lack of innovation, let's see, as I said before, how comes in Final Fantasy XII the fighting was so limited, even the movements, I remember in Prince of Persia (Dos) you could use the attack and defense, at least two movements no? that's much better.
I'll put it simple, game companies are doing the same that music companies have been doing during the past few years, selling fast crap with no essence. The most people buying it the better. So if you say games are becoming more accessible then that's not necessarily a good thing. Well it is at a certain point, but when you start over producing games just to sell more and make your company grow bigger then most of your games will of course suck.
The same goes for pop music, I'm sure you didn't know this but actually pop music is based on a simple formula and song lenght, this of course in order to catch most people's attention and wallet.
Now, why I keep babbling, well, the sole purpose of my "irritating" babbling is because I believe games are a form of art that's been simply underrated, and this form of expression could go further if the limits of creativity are broken.
Also, don't forget that not only gameplay are a form of innovation in a game, also we could talk of ambiances, history, music, etc. everything inside a game could become a new path of exploration. Let's see, Castlevania: SOTN ans Lament of Innocence incorporated a jazzy and baroque feeling to the music which made the game gain a difference ambiance, although the overall gameplay wasn't amazing, still the game was among the masses.
ICO was another game with a lot of consistency, good gameplay, the history was quite simple, the kid saving a princess, but the way the history line was twisted was simple amazing. The game was built around this vastness of great vertiginous spaces and great silences, didn't you realize there's not that much music in that game? That's another kind of innovation. Also that was a bit more artistic and that's exactly what I mean. FF XII par example seemed to go too much in the direction of Hollywood movies, not bad I admit it, but honestly could been better don't you think? I mean, where are the puzzles, if you ever played Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals par example, you might remember the kind of puzzles it had, they weren't that difficult but they weren't easy either and that was fun. Nowadays you can't easily find that many puzzles into a game anymore, and why? because most people would get easily bored with that and it wouldn't sell that much.
Also, technically I never said newer games stole anything lol, I just said newer games could be much better, if people would ask for of course but if you check the latest games you'll see different trends, and among that trend just a couple of amazing games.
And also, all the ideas for games taken? lol, come on, games are like music, meaning the possibilities and endless.

By the way people, just a trivia question for the real fans, do you know why Final Fantasy was originally called that way?

^^ A video game creation forum isn't typically the best place to throw out FF trivia :)

I think almost everyone in here knows that Squaresoft was going under and FF was slated to be their last major project before bankruptcy.

And, while there are A LOT of really bad games flooding the market these days, there are a lot of really good AND innovative games coming out, too!

The Elder Scrolls series has probably the most innovative take on the "hack and slash" formula I have ever seen. Not to mention some of the most immersive and open gameplay on the market.

The Sims and Civiliazation series, like them or not, also offer undeniably good and intuitive gameplay.

Granted, I like the older games over newer ones, too, but not everything that is spit out these days is garbage.....just most of it.

Final Fantasy Tactics, Secret of Mana, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past <---- some of the best games....ever!

Ahhh! I am very close to saying the same thing. That 8 is better than 7. I made them a tie simply because each had parts that were better than the other. So its hard to tell! But FF8 really is great; but so many haters!! I always go back and forth between which one is better... so hard for me at least, hehe. But I am glad to hear some people who didnt hate it.

---

I heard something about cliched stories? Yes, almost everything you hear now a days is cliched. My teacher once told me there are about 8 story lines in the world, when it comes down to it. The fact is, 'there is nothing new under the tree'. Everything has been overused a billion times in a billion different ways that its hard to find anything that isnt cliched! One point I'd like to make though; is its up to the writer to take something cliched and make it unique or original in some way, but its hard to do, and you dont see it too often. Second, many games arent about the story, but enjoyment! Tales of games for example: I havent felt that any of them really had that 'POW' of a story. Dont get me wrong, i still enjoyed many of the stories. But the stories have never ONCE gotten me hooked to the series. It was the shere gameplay. I base Tales of series on gameplay. If its fun and addicting to play, its great! If they stray like they did on Tales of Legendia, I hate it (and I am a tales fanatic. Have to play each and every one of them! If possible... come on and start releasing the missing gaps here in America!!). But really, you can either give me one of two things, if not both, for a game to be great in my book: 1) an unforgettable story or 2) an addicting as hell and fun gameplay that keeps me going for hours!

Thats just my two cents on the manner and I'm not trying to argue. I just heard a little bit and wanted to comment on that as well =D

Hmm... my top ten?

1) Chrono Trigger
2) Final Fantasy VI
3) Final Fantasy IIj
4) The Sims 2
5) Metroid Zero Mission
6) Final Fantasy III NES
7) Final Fantasy IV
8) Mother II (Earthbound)
9) Final Fantasy NES
10) Pikmin

Kupo.
