Plot

The game begins in the large capital city of Wendir, a metropolis known as Ferwind. After numerous yet questionable warnings are issued, a small shop in the Market District owned by aspiring artist Roger Thompson is closed. Without a job, the near bankrupt shopkeeper attempts to sell his goods on the street. Doing so, he meets a peculiar and suspicious woman by the name of Viera. Little does Roger know of what he has gotten himself into.

Theme

Venaliter Rising is not really your typical fantasy RPG with swords and dragons and an angsty hero with an odd haircut. Infact, its anything but. It takes place in a unique world, that blends in elements of fantasy, modern and steampunk. Although it has a more or less serious storyline, theres plenty of comedic relief in many cutscenes, along with a wide variety of absurd extras to unlock.

World

The world VR has no specific name. Ask any individual and you'll rarely get the same answer. Between most common Wendirians, it is simply known as Althier, an ancient word for 'All Lands'.

Wendir: The largest and supposedly most advanced continent of the planet, of the 3 continents discovered so far. Wendir is mostly a very steep plateau with different environments upon it. On most days the Sea around the land is blanketed by a light to medium fog, even when it is bright and sunny. Because there are only so many lowlands and beaches on the coast, many cities are built near the ocean.

Roger Thompson

Roger's mother had died a mere 4 years after he was born. At the age of 10 his father went missing. Since then, he has started his own business, first on the street and then in an official store. Now 24, he is more or less out of business, until he crosses paths with an eccentric yet trustable character.

Viera Ethear

Viera is, in a nutshell, not your average person. From what is known by Roger, she does not have a last name, nor any relatives in Wendir. Infact, her clothes and accented voice suggest that she is not even from Wendir.

Fast paced, strategic battles: Don't worry about boring battles where you're staring at your watch half the time and commanding your healer the other. With some scripted Quick Commands, (Block, Dodge, Parry and Counter, all accesed from the W,A,S,D keys) and speedy enemies that attack in real time, be sure to keep your fngers at the ready. Your tactics in battle could be the difference between life and death.

Minigames Galore!: All throughout the big city and the rest of the world you'll find countless things to do. From shooting ranges and tavern games to aerial dog fights and race gambling, you'll never run out of things to do and unlock.

Entertaining Cutscenes: Throughout the whole game you only see what your character sees. You dont need to sit through hours of political nonsense from a king or some government executive, and the action scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat. Character sprites for actions are plentiful, and to prevent getting over pretentious theres quite a bit of comedic relief where needed.

A Unique, Out of the ordinary experience: As said before, VR is not your typical D&D inspired RPG. It takes itself seriously, but not to a point where its too pretentious. The world is full of interesting characters and exotic enviroments, and the game is just rich with unexpected and unique elements everywhere.

December 10th, Sunday:

  • Sorry for the lack of images and/or screenshots. I'll get some up tomorrow, right now I need to scan some things and finish up a tileset or two.
  • Expect a demo sometime late next week.

December 16th, Saturday:

  • I apologize for the huge delay, I've had way too much homework this week. Added little banners, a character sketch, and some WIP Screenshots.

Seems intresting to me, most definate hit on my "try it" list.

All I want to know is, are the talking sequences abnormally large? If they are, I'd cut back on them a bit and keep mixing things up.

Plot twists. Two would be great, but keep it well hidden...thats about it really.

Keep up the good work.

@Carreu: Well, some cutscenes do get a little lengthy, but each one of them can be skipped. You wouldn't be missing anything too important either, as theres a questbook in the menu system. Theres plot twists too, but if I said what they were that would ruin the point of them. Am I right?

@Everyone else: I appreciate the positive comments, but its alot more helpful to me if you gave some criticism. Be harsh, strict, downright bastardly, saying its pure awesome doesnt exactly help me make it better.

Have you scripted the battle system already? It sounds quite interesting. Does each do something different, or do you have to choose the right one to stop full damage? I can't wait for a demo to try it out.
