my computer somehow got a MAJOR virus and now im going to have to completely reboot it i want to know if there is a way that i could save all of my work that i've done so far. Is there a way that i could possibly save it to a disc? I'ts going to be rebooted tomorrow so if anyone could help me now that would be GREATLY appreciated!

Wrong area, bub.

Also, you could maybe try System Recovery, then save your files onto an external HD? *shrug* Idk, that might help.

oh sorry i assumed it went here since it didnt fit in the other categories... but i dont have an external hd...

If you don't have an external hard drive, then you are boned, unless you have a very small amount of files and can buy a large amount of rewritable disks to put the install files and <C/>files onto.

(<C/>=Hard drive letter)

That could work, depending on the files you want to save, but its gonna take alot more than 700mb cds to save gigs of memory.

Edit: Burning, of course :3

So pretty much:

the main thing im worried about saving are my rmxp program and my game development docs. i dont even think it'll add up to a gig. but i guess what i should be asking is if i drag rmxp onto a cd can i just drag it back onto my desktop after my computer is rebooted or will i have to re-install and pay again?

Edit:
do you mean burning like im burning a music cd or i HAVE to use those programs you mentioned?

You can burn files.

Also, I dont think it would make you pay again, and if it did, you should have proof you baught it so I dont see a reason it couldnt be re-downloaded.

Well, system recovery doesn't usually get rid of viruses since the first thing a virus does is stick itself into windows system recovery archive, so if you still have trouble post again and I'll give you detailed info on how to back up all your important stuff. (geez I should charge people for this... o wait I normally do :D)

it'd be easier just to get firefox and NoScript to block viruses :/

I mean he doesn't know how to burn a CD so how would he even begin to work with Linux?

I know how to burn a cd, I'm not THAT much of a complete idiot, it's just that shadow had said burn a cd using nero or roxio, and I've never heard of those programs before.

Personally, I've NEVER had a virus that wasn't fixed by a system recovery :D

Sometimes your antivirus will pick up and successfully block or delete attempts by a virus to intrude into the system restore file.  Unless you're talking about the kind of system recovery built into OEM machines where you press a button during startup and it wipes your hard drive and replaces it with one of those disc images stored in a hidden partition.  Very few viruses are sophisticated enough to get into those but I've heard of one or two that attacked HPs in particular.
It's not an option for everyone though, and it's usually thoroughly destructive which sucks.  Some of the newer ones will keep your stuff intact, essentially like a "Repair" install from the Windows disc, but that results in the virus still possibly being present on the disc in which case you can accidentally get it started again.
Anyway it's not foolproof and it's likely to result in loss of settings and data, and that's not an acceptable option imo.

Delete everything and switch to Linux. I've never had a virus.

too true the only reason i still use windows is because some of my files can't run in WINE

@-fayte-it looks like some sorta spyware or something

go to google and look up "lavasoft ad-aware SE personal"(it's open source i believe) it detects and deletes all froms of ad-ware and spy-ware
