Urban Development (and other stuff)

I'm building up a house from scratch, step by step. I'm hoping by the end I'll have a glorious street of houses on a map in RM2K3. It's just for a bit of fun and for a project that I know I will never finish (same one as my steampunk enemies are for), but I thought I'd post up WIP shots as I go about making the house. I'm going for a tall, thin and rickety looking steampunk design with lots of those funky tudor overhangs and dented roofs.

Because the RM2K3 chipsets have limited space, I'll only be making 1 or two specific houses and then filling the rest of the set up with non-descript standard tiled buildings. To keep the map unique and interesting, I'm hoping to create an array of house tops on a fixed panorama and have inaccessible areas of the map flooded with all of the detail I wouldn't be able to get on the chipset itself. That's the plan. :)

Here some shots I've got so far as I go through the house design.

Fleshing out the design to a 16x16 grid and then getting palette/design of the walls sorted out.

Creating a different texture for the brick walls and wood

Added in more detail onto the front wall, added shade to the brick wall and started filling in more roof tiles.

Enjoy :) ©

Hah, i see you watching this thread like a hawk inq! if you watch you it just take longer for poeple to post something, plus its like 6am. Anyway I really love your colour scheme, the reds and oranges. The building design is so wierd and stylized sort of sureal. I cant wait to see the game this is for, i rember you saying something about a steampunk concept, it really shows. Ive been a steampunk geek forever now it seems its becoming a bit more mainstrea, nice to see people taking advantage of it. Let me know if you need any help in the form of concept art with your project. I got shit else to do and i would really like to work with someone who knows what theyre doing for a change. Anyway mate, cheers I love it

Like a hawk!

Sure, go ahead, Badmonur. If you're up for it and like your steampunk stuff, then I'll happily welcome some concepts for monster sprites. That'd be steampunk based and also general baddies that look unique to this particular world, so in other words creatures that don't look like anything we see on earth.

Very nice stuff thus far Inq, it looks pretty interesting and I love how you're actually drawing an original non blocky house it really adds some flare to the game in my opinion. I hope to see a lot of building s like this from you because you're so damn good at it and could make it work. Also I'd be interested in helping out the project too obviously not with artwork but with story ideas or monster concepts if you'll have me :)

An update. Bit slow on the progress, been distracted so many times by nagging parents and an attention seeking dog. Added in some more general colours to flesh out the design. Finished off those side room tiles and chimney and also added on a nice helpful citizen as a comparison to the door/house size. In real life, that'd be a really small house but for the same of map making and visual quality in game, I'm happy with the size.

Well, it's a strange house, so i'll consider it like a cartoon house (with different form of the real world house)
The texture is beautiful, and the boy on the stair is cool too, i really want too see it ready ^~

Good Luck Inquisitor.

I believe in RM2K3 it's 250% resolution or close to that.

Here's the latest version. I think this is the last I'm going to work on it today. Added some shading to the front bricks and window. Also added more general colours to the piece to help understand the whole lot.

It keeps getting better Inq I didn't know ti was for 2k3 so thats all cool then, its gonna be pretty massive looking on the screen for 2k3 though it should work. The only flaw I can find is that the brick tile makes a diagonal when put on top of each other it's nitpicky but noticeable.

It's looking really sweet Inq, but for some reason it doesn't have a really steampunk feel to it. But maybe when it's all finished.

Progress just keeps on coming. I've made it more steampunky now, 006. Bit more cogs, bronze machines and stuff planned out. I'm now having to have a think about what texture I want for the bottom floor walls.

Cheers, Bad. That's some very nice concept art and very helpful. :) Gives me some new fun little creatures to pixel. :thumb:. Got the theme of the game creatures down there nicely. If anything, future sketches if you want to do them would preferably be even more other worldly.

These little dark craving creatures skulk around all of the dirty corners of the world, feeding off small animals and meaty scraps left by lazy, wandering inhabitants. If in large groups, it might just have a taste for human flesh, so watch your back future gamers!!

This is for a private game, so it'd be a tileset but not public. If I get around to making a map, I'll do it as a mixture between tileset and panorama as this gets the best results! You can making a busy, bustling city map by pasting a load of building tops together in an image and then placing it as a perfect fit panorama on a map.

Not sure how it reminds you of Monkey Island, Berserker. Save that for my other game which is actually like Monkey Island. :P

Unfortunately I don't get much time midweek, but last night I did finish off the pixel version of Badmonur's second artwork piece:

Sufficiently creepy! These two...things double for the world's vermin and aren't much of a threat unless they're backed into a corner, or are in large packs and come across a lone, foolish traveller.

Inq, I would like to request and learn to sprite robots for my tactical RPG. So far, here's my initial efforts. Note that this robot I'm working on, is made for NetGame Crisis Saga's in-game MMO.

Now, the request here is that, since I've posted my temporary work, the robot was supposed to be gold, and there were red crystal orbs under the large shoulders, and the robot was supposed to be hovering.

Erm, please don't post requests in other people's threads. If you want feedback, make a new topic; this one is about Inq's work, not yours. ~Peri
