Upgrading RAM

Hello,

I have a computer with 256 RAM shared with Graphics. Anyway, i was wondering if you can put two diffrent brands and or sizes of RAM with the other RAM already installed. Cause i was thinking of taking the RAM out of one computer and putting it in the other one. Can i even do that.

PS: Yes, i reliese i need to put certain RAM types in my computer. But i just need to check if i can put diffrent brands etc.

Yes you can put different brands of RAM into your computer, but it really isn't recommended (actually it's discouraged). My advice if you are using sticks like OCZ or something, stick with OCZ RAM. Mixing different brands could possibly cause problems due to different features (i.e. different latency, ect.)

Also (as you said), you need to take into account what type of RAM your mobo supports (i.e. if you have a mobo that has DDR slots, then you cannot put DDR2 sticks in the slots due to pin difference...and vice versa).

Well, can i take out RAM from one computer and use it in anothner? Will i see any improvemtn? If its slows it down what can i do to reverse the problem (Just take it out?)?

You can use RAM from another computer, but you need to make sure the RAM itself is compatible with the motherboard. You cannot put DDR RAM (174 pin I think) into DDR2 slots (220 pin), or DDR2 into DDR slots...it won't fit and will more than likely damage your memory and some other components when you try to turn the computer on.

Frankly, I wouldn't try it for the sake of argument because you could cause more harm than good if you don't know what you're doing.

OK, i think the memory might be exactly the same brand ans stuff. Becaue when the guy installed it he added 128 RAM to my other computer. All i want to do is steal off it.

Just pop out a stick of what you currently have in your computer and look at it. It should have somewhere on it how many pins (And yes, I do think it's 174 Wings) and what kind (PC3200, etc) and the size (128, 256, etc)

Usually you'll find (and this relies on the mobo) that same size RAM sticks will benefit more than 1 single large stick (two 512s can be better than 1 1gb)

But that's all up to opinion a lot of the time...just make sure you match brand, and type...otherwise you could fry the chips, or the mobo

Ok, thanks for that sketch

BTW, im pretty sure its 184 pins.

and i opened the old computer and its completly diffrent ram. oh well.
