UK EMA national delay

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7593747.stm

I'm really annoyed with this, I need text books that add up to £120 in cost but if I am on EMA I could rent each book for almost nothing for the year.
From what I heard those who applied, if eligible, they will get £30 before the EMA starts, but with this situation I sometimes doubt we'd even get that.
I am worried.
It is unacceptable that students up and down the country will be left to struggle due to administrative incompetence
I've really been hit with my financial problems and lack of EMA and the extra support I get for being on the EMA is really dragging me further down.

On it's way >:|

It's always late the start of the year anyway.

I do more time than a lot of kids in my 6th form. They get £30 a week, I get nothing. Like I said, at least you get EMA in the first place.

OH NOES MY FREE MONEYS ARE DELAYED!!! BASTARDS!!!

Slightly annoying that kids like yourselves are whining about this, also, you're at college. Aside from private education, there are no colleges that require you to buy textbooks. Maybe one or two workbooks in languages, but they'll be a tenner each. Stop whining and get your parents to bloody sub you twenty or so.

God I remember when I had to afford things myself, with my own money.  Crap, I even remember my education system, where there weren't enough text books and we had to share.  Sometimes three people per book, and you all needed the book to study.  And crap, we used to go to kinkos and make copies of the pages we needed, and *gasp* pay out of our own pockets D:

God I miss Junior High.
How did we youngins ever survive :s
Not like we were adults or anything with legal jobs or nothin

ahahaahahhhhah wow england sucks you faggots are so spoiled

why don't you get a job and work for your money like a real man (ie american) instead of mooching off your fucking government and then bitching when it doesn't come fast enough

It is a bit silly. You shouldn't be in college because you need money. If you need money get a job (My sister got £600 from a two-week job at the NEC in Birmingham, during the X-mas holidays, just taking tickets at the door to some place). EMA is only like... £700 - £1500 a year (including bonuses).

Plus you're 16, meaning minimum wage is at it's lowest, so places will be more likely to hire you with no experience. That means when you finally leave school, and they have to pay you more per hour by law, they'll be more likely to hire you as you have experience.

It's also ridiculous that only "poor" people get it. But whatever.

There's a reason poor people get aid.  Particularly when it comes to education & workforce.
The hope is if you educate the poor, they aren't poor anymore.  If you give jobs to the poor, they aren't poor anymore.
Give them a chunk of the economy, things tighten, become smaller, and you don't need as much spending.
Of course it's a pipe dream, but everything political and economical is.

Awesome Bro

I used to claim EMA and quite rightfully so. My mum & dad have paid taxes all their life and it's less money for them to pay whilst I was studying. It's also nice to see money being spent in areas that promote education instead of giving the p*kis their 40" LCD and a four poster bed. Our current Government is beyond a joke and it needs to change. The general elections will be the future of this country and I hope people make the right decision.

It's based on a lot more than that if you care to look beyond the bold header. My dad got me EMA and he was on 80K a year working in Paris. My mum is on at LEAST £25k and I got the full £30 :)

I was at college like .............. over 3 years ago so the gaps may have been filled. I'm sure that when I was still in education EMA only applied to College as it was an incentive to indulge in higher education.

Yeah. It's very silly how they're doing to really. I know some people whose parent's aren't working but are instead living off various investment deals, the family fortune etc etc and are worth squillions and they qualify for the maximum allowance. I qualified for the full amount even though my 'rents bring in a rather substantial sum from across three continents. Might as well claim it though - it's not like they give you much for what they take. ;)

LOL REALLY?  you guys dont pay for books and you're complaining

here in north america we pay for tuition, AND books

and guess what they aren't cheap

my god.....

I had to pay for my books.

By tuition, are you sure we're talking about the same thing?

Britain goes:

School (ages 4 to 16) - free providing it's public school
College (ages 16-18) - free in most cases
University - extortionately expensive

Normal School is free, that would be up to age 18 (give or take, depending on birthday) if it's public, but they still penny and dime your ass left and right for functions and god forbid you want to be part of an extracurricular activity (the only free extracurricular activity in my high school was the military thing - I forgot what they call it... cheerleading or sports you had to pay out the ass for - cheerleading for my neighbor at a local high school -one I went to too- cost him over $600 last year for the final month ALONE, that's more than the initial paycheck for signing up D:<).

College is not downright free unless someone else is paying for a scholarship or you are in the military academies.

In fact if you live out of district you could be paying even more than locals.
For example a 10 credit course at one college (Southern Idaho :x) will cost different fees.
Credits  In-District  Out-of-State  Foreign  High School
If your "In-District": $950.00 (Residents of Jerome and Twin Falls counties)
Out-of- State costs: 2650.00

That's a $1,70.00 difference
PLUS the price for books

Is college there the same as college or university here?

Here university costs around £3,150 a year ($6,300), for usually three years.
