Two new songs!

The last march- There are alot of sour chords that dont fit. Theres also no clear sign of any dynamics, as the bass overbears for most of the piece, then the double reeds do as well.

A New Day Emerges- First off, I like your melody. Its peaceful, yet strong enough to be a determined characters theme. The synth at the begininng (sounds like a percussive organ) playing the whole notes sound bad imo. Try a low brass or a soft string. At the climax, give the melody to more instruments or back off the bass; it sounds icky. The ending was good. The light sounds made a crisp harmony.

Glad to see so many new musicians here! Be sure to post more of your work soon =)

Thanks for replying Moogle!

Perhaps we have a completely different midi enviroment set-up? Because the pizzicato strings and the string ensembles is a lot more dominating on my computer, and as far as I'm concerned the melodies match up.  It could be either the set up or that I'm just so used to hearing the song that my critical sense is worn down:p I can see how the bass can be a bit dominating in some parts of the beginning, but I think it gets better towards the end of the song.

It's a hammond Organ. I just thought it sounded like a church organ, but with a richer sound which was the sound I was going for. My first intention was to make a song that fitted a church scene in my game, although it didn't end up that way.

I think it was the string ensemble and bass notes that had some sour chords, or maybe because of the bass' low velocity it sounded sour. Perhaps there is a differance in sound between us, so on that ill give you the benefit of the doubt =)

Oh definitely. The bass is toned down when it approaches sentiment, but I think it would sound a little better if at the beginning it wasnt so powerful.

Heh, I knew it was some sort of organ, haha. It doesnt sound terrible but at the same time maybe a synth string would make the piece more fleuent? The piece actually sounds like a strong character theme, which is good, its very reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII's Barret Theme.

May I ask what VST and program you are using?

I'll see what I can do with the bass when I edit the song again. I guess I'll just wait it out for now, and go edit it when I haven't listened to the song for a while. That way I can come back with a new "first impression" again and sort out the parts that stick out in the wrong way.

As for the VST, I have no clue. I haven't downloaded any plugins that I'm aware of on this computer. How can I find out?
The program I'm using is Guitar Pro 5 actually. I usually use the program to make guitar driven rock or accoustic songs, though. So I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to this genre.

I have to agree with moogle on this one, the songs are going somewhere, I can definitely hear that.  The middle part in the Last March really hits the mood on the spot.  I'd just like to see more diversity mixed in there, the melody in A New Day Emerges, I've heard it before, BUT thats ok.  Just make it your own and it can be a real pretty song.

Thanks!
The biggest problem I had with The Last March was making smooth transitions, if the song were to be longer I would mix things up a lot more.
Where have you heard it before? I sure haven't done that consciencely.

I've heard it in a few songs, mind you in different keys, but the same melody.  Don't worry though, I've done it myself and with so many composers and so many songs, sometimes its hard not write something that sounds similar to something else.

Oh most def. Use of repetition in music is actually flattery, some of the greats in composing used that method all the time.
