I just got HBO for free with my housing development's new deal with my new cable provider. Being a person who HATES trying to watch a long-standing series from the beginning (don't have the time/patience to sit there and watch all the ep's to catch up), I fell in line and took HBO up on their newest series: True Blood.
This is an odd show but I'm liking it thus far.
The premise is: A pretty blonde white girl in a deeper part of Louisiana (played by Rogue from the X-Men movies), who happens to have one-sided telekinesis (she can read minds but not implant thoughts in others), gets entangled with a vampire who's trying to "normalize" in a world that hates him.
It's present day; supposedly vamp's have lived among us for centuries, but have only recently made themselves public in an attempt to "blend" into regular life. A company in Japan is able to produce/sell faux blood for them to live off of, so they no longer have to kill folks. But this is the south, and them folk don't take kindly to different folk.
A couple of murders pop up in this sleepy little town, and vampires seem to be the culprit, which obviously threatens the vamp's trying to coexist with humans. One of them (named Bill) saves the telepath girl (named Sookie) from a certain death, and she becomes enamoured with him. He's a "nice" vampire, so he protects her while shit hits the proverbial fan, while she tries to figure out who's doing the killing around town.
The pilot was touch-and-go, and really seemed like a slightly more PG-13 version of Buffy or Angel. But I think it's on episode 4 now, and the characters are easy to like, the implications are beginning to deepen, and the very dark, underlying humor is surfacing. There are some slightly disturbing/adult parts that set it apart from any old vamp story allowed on the networks. Sex, nudity, lots of swearing, drug abuse, and a few scenes containing some interestingly slain people saturate the episodes, which is very welcome.

The guy who plays Bill kinda overdoes it IMHO, and some of the "super speed" effects the vampires use are cheesy, but the human actors and their interactions are really great. I thought the dynamic of "racism" between vamps/humans was pretty cool, and I actually rather like the fact that these vampires AREN'T the Anne Rice variety. They're more traditional (they can't come in without an invitation, they fear crosses and garlic and the sun, they can drink ANY blood, alive or not, and their only explanation for their inner workings is "i'unno. Magic?")
Anyway I'm liking this. It's now on my DVR queue alongside Heroes and whatever the hell else my husband watches.
So if you have HBO or you like to watch *cough*legitimate shows on the internet*cough* then check True Blood out.
This is based off books of the same name, though I have not read them.
