TRIWEEKLY CHALLENGE #1: D-D-Dungeons!!

The theme for April's triweekly challenge is

D-D-Dungeons!!

(see this thread for more information on triweekly challenges)

Dungeons are a staple of nearly every RPG that's ever existed, ever. Why, an RPG without a dungeon of some sort is hardly a dungeon at all!

All you have to do for this month's challenge is create a dungeon of some sort. The rest is up to you.

Get creative! A dungeon doesn't necessarily have to mean a grimy, dirty, medieval prison, although it should be dark, be underground and be hostile. Try perhaps a futuristic prison, or an ice cave, or even a secretive basement. It's up to you to decide!

Don't focus on the graphics and music too much, or you'll never finish. Feel free to use ripped graphics or anything off the internet. For this challenge, the main thing you should focus on is creating a very dungeon-like atmosphere. You can get creative - try adding a backstory, some interesting characters, and even some puzzles. But remember to keep "dungeon" in mind, and make sure gameplay is your main focus.

Guidelines:

  • You can use any maker for this challenge. RPG Maker, Game Maker, anything you can think of. Don't be afraid to try a new program!
  • The game should ideally be at least 5-10 minutes long, though a longer game doesn't necessarily mean a better one.
  • As this is the first challenge, you can use any graphics or music you want. Just give credit where credit is due.

Deadline: Thursday, April 22

Once you are finished your game, PM the file to me. On April 23rd, all the games will be available for public download in another thread, where people will vote on your game.

You can use this thread to show off your game's progress, ask questions, or talk about the theme. You don't have to sign up, as long as I get that PM before April 23!

What are you waiting for? Get crackin'!!

great idea! especially since i've never completed an actual full dungeon in rmxp this is the perfect chance to learn tho i'm gonna need to read some tutorials perhaps ;)

Dadevster, is it ok to use 2 or more tilesets in our dungeon for this challenge ?

Got myself a pack of puzzles in my mind today, worked them out...

I could actually participate in this contest-thingy I suppose...

Wow! It really is insanely motivating. And inspiring. This is a wonderful little way to get me to make some little cameo games for my main games characters. Think Origin Stories from Dragon Age. Here's a little screenshot from the opening dialogue sequence:

The game will probably run from 30 to 45 minutes depending on how long it takes you to beat my clever little puzzles.

Yeah, that shouldn't really be a problem.

Can I make a text-based dungeon crawler?
Absolutely!

Oh wow, that's gorgeous! And 30 to 45 minutes? I don't know how you do it. Great to hear it's motivating you, though.

hahahah shit, I'm so going to do this. I've got script frenzy going on as well, but who cares, scripts are easy.

I'll probably be doing the usual rmxp crap, though.

I like the idea of these challenges... Should get some more activity. Even though I really should be working on my own game, I guess I'll have a go at this :). Just a question, does the micro game have to have a storyline, or can it just be a dungeon?

EDIT: Oh, and if you use any systems, are you allowed to use systems I've made previously? That kind of goes for graphics too.

Also, how will these be graded and judged, if there is going to be judging provided. Are we working on mood and setting, puzzles, or an overall mini adventure with story and the whole shebang.

You can include as much of a plot and story as you want - it's entirely up to you. And feel free to use a system or graphics you've made. In fact, the more diverse systems we have, the better!

There won't really be any judging, or at least not the traditional kind with selected judges and whatnot. Like the pixel challenges, at the end of the three weeks each game will be available for public download, and everybody will get the chance to vote on them. The game with them most votes wins. If for some reason this system doesn't work, then we'll implement some sort of judging.

Mine seems to be nearing the 20 minute length so far, do you mind if it's a 40-120 minute game?
That's not a problem at all, and understandable considering it's text-based.

Well, thought I'd post a bit of quick info on what I'm working on for this. Since I can do whatever I want, I've gone for a full storyline for my game, which is called 'The Underworld: Through the Door'. I'm not saying much on what it's actually about yet as I'm one of the first to post anything and I don't want to give too much away yet, but I can say that it's set in Hell and you play as a boy who's trying to get out. I'm going for a sort of platforming/puzzling style dungeon. So, here's a screen:

This is the first area that acts as a sort of tutorial for the game. I'm not going for flashy graphics at all as I want to actually get this done on time :P.

Does a mansion with a big-ass basement and a hidden crypt qualify? If not then I might as well continue my little "Tochtli's Dungeon!"-project and submit that for the challenge.

Wouldn't that be kind of cheating? Using a project you've already worked on? Surely the point of the competition is to make something new?
