Tips on Character Personalities

This guide will give you some tips on how to create interesting characters with unique personalities.

Tip #1: Start out cliché and end unique
Try thinking of a commonly-used (cliché) personality, such as the valiant hero who fights for good. Once you think of something you want your character to have, try adding a few perks and quirks, like ADHD (hyperactive), or an uncommon trait that is repetitively exploited throughout the game, like being partially deaf or talking waaay too much. Don't be afraid to have a cliché character at first, just choose something and give it some interesting and unique traits/quirks.

Tip #2: Emotion
A very important part of any person, real or not, is emotion. Keep in mind that, unless your character is a robot (which in that case would probably not even have a personality), the character you are making is a person, too. They should have emotions like anybody else, because they are “realâ€Â

This is a really nice tutorial. It is simple, but often overlooked. I don't know how many games I have lost interest in because they didn't have any plot or the characters were "flat". I liked your example of making a characters ADHD, because one of my characters I am working actually is! (bases on a person I know). My Favorite games are the ones that draw you in with originality and emotion.

I found that starting out with basic things like Blood Type and Zodiac Sign (and the 'science' behind them lays a good backbone for a character's personality. It also ties into this, but if you then plan out your other characters with different blood types and signs, it'll become much easier to determine how well one character gets along with the other.
