Tileset Practice (WIP)

Here you can find a collection of my tilesets. These are a constant WIP, and although I am intending them to be used in my game, they are largely being done for practice. Keep in mind that some of the pieces in these tilesets may not be in a finished state.

Latest:

Tilesets
A few pieces in the first tileset are edits of Hyptosis' stuff, which I may or may not leave in there.

Autotiles (may have a few minor tiling issues):

If you'd like to use these for something, I'd appreciate a PM first. Not for commercial use.

To be honest with you, I'm loving how it's coming along, although the grass itself doesn't really resemble grass with the way you've shaded it, loos like it could be water if you made it blue, lol, but other than that it's looking realyl good.

And sorry but I can't help you with the trees, I have no idea how to sprite them too, lol.

Hmm...I can agree with the grass. I didn't quite get the effect I was hoping for, I think the problem is that it turned out to be too horizontal.

Some updates: (tree is still very much wip).

Map example, don't mind the part of my palette that is next to the trees:

The water looks a little flat, maybe you could somehow texture water (How the hell do you texture water !?), but the trees actually look really decent alongside the grass and paths, however, I'd add a little more shading to the trunk of the tree, and the shadows look a little out of place, maybe they're too dark (Shadows too dark !?),

But other than what I've said, it does look really nice, all you need to do is make a template to go alongside it, heh.

I like the very cartoonish style. The water and tree fits together well although the grass is a bit too detailed if you are going for such a style.

Thats starting to look pretty god damn amazing now, I LOVE how the trees have turne dout, however, the rocks (They are rocks, right ?) seem a little off with the shading, they don't look like they're actually on the grass, but floating above it.

I thought it was just that I had made my rock too dark at first, but it's still looking off after lightening the palette. I think I might just have to scrap that rock and try again, I think it's partly a perspective problem. I'm going to try and do some more objects for the next update, those will probably be my weak point in this.

Updated Tileset:

I've added a few more objects, it may not look like much more, but it does take me more time than it probably should. Also modified the cliff to give the edges more of a border. Pardon the relatively poor and crowded mapping in the example.

Autotiles (unchanged from last):

Damn this is comming along nicely. (been watching this over at Neo)

One thing though your cliffs still need a bit of work.
Tryhere for a few pointers, I learnt a fair bit from ocean.
Else wise this tileset looks rather attractive
I still note that your yet to alter your water auto-tile. If your having difficulty always take a peek at the RTP and get an idea from there. The RTP water still impresses me, even for it's squareness. (easily fixable though)

Kudos to the progress!

This is hawt man. I can't wait for this to be done, a game made in this style would be cool and unique. You have any sprites that match the unique style?

This started well up until the tree, where I think you've just randomly dotted pixels around hoping to get it to look right. Unfortunately to me it looks more like candy floss than leaves. Also, the trunks look rather unpolished and scraggely just like the leaves. Also, they're out of perspective compared to the rest of the tileset.

Your grass, mud and water is all so simple, but it works so perfectly for me. Where you're going wrong with the trees, trunks and other general objects for me is that you're not giving them sufficient shading on one side. They appear too flat. Your colour palettes seem okay to me at the moment, so you should restart your tree or heavily edit it to make it appear more curved and leafy.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I think my tree looks a lot better now. I wanted to try and keep some of the previous style, hopefully it turned out looking okay:

The next thing I'll probably tackle is a revision of my cliff walls.

Edit: I wasn't going to upload a map, but when I put the changes in a little bit ago, I saw that it made a big difference.
Compare with the map in my last post, only thing that changed was the tree.

That is looking better to me, it looks more like a tree rather than candy floss, but I'm still very much concerned by the lack of shadow on the one side and the trunk being almost head-on perspective. You should address these as well before you move on.

you should update you first post as you update the tileset.
Done and done.

Added more shadow, and tried to fix perspective with some different shading:

This was mostly experimental, but I tried modifying my water tile to get some more detail in by showing the bottom. so, shallow type water:

Wow! I love the tileset now!
However, you should make custom character sets as well =]

Maybe I will eventually, right now I'm just trying to concentrate on making this tileset. I have a feeling the character set would give me a lot more trouble, so for now I'm just going to keep using the one's in the screenshots. (made with mack's creator).

After much frustration, I present the completely new cliff tiles:

P.S. I hope you guys don't mind me updating this thread so much, the feedback has been very helpful.

edit: I almost forgot, there's also the startings of a house in the updated set in the first post. I wouldn't pay it too much attention right now though, not sure how much of it will stay how it is; the roof tile is definately getting scrapped.
