the sims 3

sims-3.jpg

The Sims 3 was released, finally, on June 2nd (state-side--I think the UK got an early release). I got it, and I've been playing it for a few days now.

I'm in a weird place with it.
It's fun, and it's a time-suck. I don't think they could possibly fuck up that aspect of it.
But it's like The Sims 2.5.

I'll run through some notes I've taken of it.

Old Mechanics from Sims 2

You still create families and houses and crap like that.

The sims age. They start as infants and die as elders (unless you intervene somewhere inbetween ).

A lot of the old objects from Sims 2 are here (with updated textures etc).

Interactions with said objects are disappointingly similar to the predecessor.

You still get different-color ghosts depending on death.

Grim Reaper still comes to claim them.

You still have maids and repairmen.

Lifted from Sims 2 Seasons expansion, you can plant seeds and garden them.

You still have needs, but there are less and they deplete a little slower.

There are still community lots like parks and libraries to visit, though like in the Sims 2 Base Game, they are largely uninteresting outside of being sociable.

Sims still gain skill points from the shit they do, but it's much more interactive and interesting.

Like in one of the expansions (nightlife?), you can have cars and garages.

New Mechanics to Sims 3

Open world -- after the initial game boot-up, there are no loading screens. This is the biggest reason to get the game. It's pretty fun to just walk across the street, visit a neighbor, or jog across town, with no waiting.

You can collect shit. Like seeds, bugs, fruits, minerals, gems, fish, shit like that. It all does various things. You can sell some of it, refine some of it, use it to cook, keep the fish/insects as pets, plant the seeds, etc. etc.

There are "chance cards" that happen constantly. They give you opportunities to do shit and stay active. The reward is "lifetime happiness", which equates to longer lives and happier sims.

You can prolong aging, quicken it, or stop it altogether, if you prefer.

Mood is affected by "moodlets". If you have dirty shit all over the place, the sim will get a moodlet that pisses them off around it. If you just had a baby, you'll be elated about it for a few days. Etc. There are ...thousands of them.

Create-a-Style allows you to recolor/repattern almost anything. It's pretty badass.

Pros to Gameplay

The game is designed to be easy on slower/crappier hardware. I have heard of a lot of graphical bugs and loading problems on crappier machines, but as mine isn't, I haven't experienced any hanging or graphics issues.

The graphics are improved. Probably not as much as I'd like, it's no masterpiece, but it looks better overall and the vistas can be rather beautiful to stare at sometimes.

You can jog anywhere, run anywhere, bike anywhere. You can find neat things and meet new sims on the way. It's rather cool.

There are community events, like BBQ contests and olympics. Most of them are rabbit holes but they're neat to send your sim off to sometimes.

Interactions, job promotions, and skill-ups have become more forgiving and immersive. You can choose the "style" of a lot of the interactions.

Some people are pissed about the "roundish" or "chubby" features of the sims themselves, but I prefer it. I think a lot of these people were those used to custom content, because base game sims in the sims 2 were horrid looking.

The townies, in general, look better. Pre-made houses are nicer, and are designed better.

Scenery, like farmland, lighthouses, waterfalls, etc. are really quite awesome. And your sim will react to it.

You can have triplets.

When a sim is evil, he'll get evil interactions, like taking candy from a baby, or enjoying others' suffering. When they're extreme, they'll love extreme shit like being lit on fire. When they're handy, they'll love repairing shit. When they are flirty, they'll love woohoo'ing all over the place.

Interactions with other sims are deeper. Gone are the days of constant repeated actions and simple methods of building relationships or point-based prerequisites. You don't need to be in love to woohoo, you just need the right compatibility and interactions.

Mysterious lawn gnomes are amazing. You'll see. It's freaky. Best thing in the game.

Dead folks go to the graveyard now. So you don't have to worry over burying granny in the backyard.

The water effects are really gorgeous.

You can own investments in businesses to make a decent chunk of change on the side.

You can vend your fruits at the grocery store.

You can buy books and take classes to quickly improve skills.

You no longer have friend requirements to get promotions.

It's easier to make friends and keep them.

Certain lifetime bonuses, like the ability to shut off needs, or to change moods on a whim, or make yourself more attractive to other sims, is pretty great.

A lot complain about the UI but I have no problem with it at all.

Cons to Gameplay

Rabbit holes (i.e. your sim goes in and disappears for a while) are frequent. The only community lots you can actually go INTO and interact with are parks, beaches, libraries, and (some) museums.

Memories and family photo albums are gone. You can still take pictures but it doesn't do anything for you in-game. I didn't think I'd miss this but it turns out that trying to create your own stories and shit is real disappointing without a way to log it!

If you like to play multiple households, you're going to get really pissed. When you're playing another family, the other families, even ones you create, will age, have babies, get married, move away, or even die. This wouldn't be so bad except the game is a real bitch about it. If you have a female sim that's not in the active household, she probably WILL have a baby, within like 5 minutes. And you won't even be able to tell who the father is without searching the family tree :x

You still can't build walls next to foundations, and split-levels have been eliminated. WTF?

Cars and bikes are retarded. They just clip straight through shit. There are no "backing out" or "parking" animations. When you have a car or bike and want to go, the thing will disappear and reappear with your sim on/in it on the street. Feels sloppy.

You can't recolor fences or stairs. This wouldn't be so bad but your choices are pretty limited there.

There is a Sims 3 Store, in which you can pay REAL MONEY to buy downloaded content. WTF, that's rather gay. And you'll end up spending way more money on less shit than in Stuff Packs. (but there are always torrents ... Oh shit I didn't say that :x)

No boob/ass sliders. All women are stuck with B-cups and tiny asses. Gay

Elder womens' bodies look HORRIBLE. I mean old people are never hugely attractive IRL but I don't see why even fit bombshells have to turn into saggy man-looking hags in their 60's o_O

You can only woohoo in bed. Which is disappointing because the Sims 2's public woohoo's were hilarious to me :(

No aliens or UFO's or werewolves or vampires or plant-sims or servos. The "supernatural" creature in the game is the ghost. Which can possibly become playable, and spawn ghost-babies. But they don't really do anything special outside of be transparent and float around.

The TV channels are lame as hell. They only feature like 1 show each on a 30-second loop, with no fake commercials. I'm sure it would have been simple to just jack some machinima from the creators' communities. so the TV gets real lame real fast :/

No more hot tubs :(

------

There's a lot more but I need to get back to work.
Anyway, it's a fun game. And it's still just as addictive.
The large pro's outweigh the nitpicks.
But the game still feels like it could have gone through more polish.
I'll wait and see what the expansions bring, however.

Do you have the game? What're your thoughts :)
Any questions? I could answer them :)

I bought it about two days ago. It's pretty fun, but I still like the Sims 2 better. I like the fact that you can become partners with businesses, at any age. My teenage Sim owns 6 businesses.

I heard the next expansion pack should be opening up most of the rabbit holes. I guess so you can follow your sims to work or open up the activity venues or whatever. Which is something I've been wanting for a long time so awesome B)

I wish they'd incorporated more stuff from Seasons. I loved winter and plantsims in the seasons expansion pack. I'm jonesing for them :(
I wasn't expecting them to be included or anything but they're my biggest points which make me miss Sims 2.

I've had the game for a while, and I found that you can turn off Sim aging in the options, but you can't change that option until you've loaded your family. I found out too late, so my guy and his wife became old.. so I can't have any more kids. It's annoying as hell. I don't know how to de-age a Sim..

I've never played any of the other Sims, so I can't compare it. However, I like just about everything about it. My girlfriend tells me that one cool thing is being able to make diagonal rooms and set furniture diagonally.

Overall, this is a cool game. My favorite part is having all my Sims leave the house and then rebuild it. I just wish I had found the age option before.. my first game I played it by myself with no family members, and I had THE most epic fucking house.. now I can't get into it. I don't know how to get a second house.

EDIT: btw, what is the split level you mean? I guess I don't get that point.. you can have a 2, 3, 4 or even 5 floor house, I think.

Have it, play it all the time, love it.

It is just... BETTER... I can't excactly tell what it is, but it is better than sims 2 in so many ways... And the problem with the sudden babys... I had it once. But with a guy. And there wasn't even a mother in the family tree. But I just send in a dummy sim and moved him out with the baby and deleted them.

I think the open world is a damn great improvement. I mean just now I played with a famaly and the twin daughters went to the pool with their mother, while the father was in the park hanging around and playing guitar. And I could watch both. At the same time...
That really encourages me to get my sims of their lot. In sims 2 community lots were just a pain in the ass.

I wish the first expansion will have weather though. I really want it to rain in sunset valley.

a split level home is one whose levels are moderately elevated or de-elevated at different points, possibly changing ceiling heights of the floor below.

so like you go up 20 stairs to the upstairs hall but to get to the master bedroom you go down 3 stairs. it makes for a more interesting floorplan and house layout, and allows for more interesting stair placements and the like.

Anyway split-levels probably won't be missed by many but as someone who's in the business of making floorplans I miss it :(
It was introduced in one of the Sims 2 expansions. I can't remember which one. But I never stopped using it after it was introduced, so I figured it'd be in this one. Oh well, I'll just wait for another expansion I guess :)

I've loved all the Sim games, but the Sims 3 looks too similar to the Sims 2 for me to want to get it, especially as I have most of the Sims 2 expansion packs anyway.
I would have get it if they put some nifty multiplayer features, or maybe revonated the control system and made it more of an open-RPG (I'd love to the use the arrow keys to move about). I haven't read all the posts here, but is it worth getting the game just for a few extra (albeit significant) features?

Ah.

Honestly, that's all I do with this game, too. I have all my people working, and I'm just rebuilding the house every time they leave. I'm never satisfied with what I have. I just wish I could buy that damn house I had with my single guy. I didn't pay attention to the lot sizes, but I've got a pretty damn good lot size. I have a pool, garage, big house with a little 'shed' type area with a picnic table and telescope in it.

I see that a lot, but let us be honest: If it had those stuff it wouldn't be sims anymore. I mean than it would just be like secondlife.
I love to watch my sims in their own little world and doing crazy stuff with them without having to worry that someone else comes in and destroys my process and vice versa.

On to your last question: Like I said I think sims 3 is better than 2, even though I have all expansion packs for 2. It feels much more dynamic and it is rather funny to see the world around your sims change.

Yeah, I get the Second Life bit. I just think it could be done well, but I don't want it to become all the other cookie-cutter games coming on.
And I'm not talking multiplayer as in MMO, but maybe invite one or two friends to connect over the internet, and allow them to control their own household. It would work, as everything evolves whether you're there or not anyway. Still considering whether to get it.

Indeed, half the fun in Sims was designing the most original houses around. Are you sure you can't do something similar this with ConstrainFloorElevation though? But being able to pick every color/texture offsets for this, I guess.

I found a glitch that is annoying the HELL out of me:

I was unhappy with my Sims's outfit plan, so I changed it. Now every time he does something, he puts on the wrong clothes. When he exercises. he puts on his Formal Wear. When he swims, he puts on his pajamas. When he sleeps, he either puts on his work clothes or his swim-suit. It's not a game-ruining glitch, but it annoys the HELL out of me. (and NO, my Sims doesn't have the insane trait, and never did)

does he have the "inappropriate" or "absent-minded" traits? those sims will put on the wrong clothes for the wrong occasions sometimes too.

i haven't played with that feature much yet no. it's hard to trick the thing into realizing the house has multiple levels. and the patterns you apply get all stretched out :(

Like every wall in my home is made out of the simple Pool wall, and yet its awesome from the inside, like what cant you do with that wall :D

You can't have sex with it.. :(

So like, there's just about one thing that I don't like about this game. You can't have multiple households.. I married one of my daughters off to some guy, and I moved her into his house, then I lost total control of her. I can't swap to her house and control those sims, or anything. That's pretty stupid.. you just up and "lose" those sims. Like, wtf were they thinking? Idk if it's gonna come in an expansion. At the moment, I've got two families living in my one house that keeps getting larger.. pretty soon I won't even be able to have my pool anymore. :( Or my garage :( or my lake :(

:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

You can change householda, psiclone. Since I have the german version I don't know how the buttoms are called you have to press, but it should be someone in the manual. How about reading this things before complaining?

yeah idr the button either but you just click the family and say you want to make that the active household. your sims you made will still age and do shit when you're not looking, and probably a lot of what they do when you're not controlling them will piss you off, but you can switch what family you're playing and when by making it your active household.

like i said in the OP it's not a good game if you like dealing with multiple fam's at once, because they will often have babies and get married and die and move out without your consent when you're playing another house. but i typically dont play that way so it's not as big of a deal for me.

Well I am playing with multiple families at a time (7 right now) And it works perfect for me. They don't do stuff that really bothers me. The most I got is that people who are single get themselves girl/boyfriends, but I can just cancel those relationships as I see fit.
And even if it bothers people you could always uncheck the option that the story progresses. I know that it doesn't work right now, but there is some workaround that bug already.

But I can see where people are coming from when they complain about it. Right now the neighbourhood developes a little to fast. They could fix that with the next patch.

there's a mod/hack out now in beta on More Awesome Than You which fixes almost every currently known annoying bug, glitch, or disabled editability feature. I don't know why it's taking EA so long to provide a patch since private modders can fix all their mistakes within a few days of release, without even knowing any of the code going into it :/

anyway if you use it be sure to back up your Bin files.
also good lord i've never seen 4chan infect a forum more heavily and more embarrassingly. they have some smart modders but jesus they all pal around like morons :|
and i thought i was a dweeb :specs:
