The Sad Passing of Common Sense

Please, let's all bow our heads in sorrow......................

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.

Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap,and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, then great; if not, join the majority and do nothing.

I've been meaning to find out who said that too - I just haven't been bothered to look it up yet.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmund Burke (1700s) - often regarded as the father of Anglo-American Conservative values.

It's an interesting thing, that - like linguistic decay - every generation seems to feel that Common Sense no longer exists from when they were young...

It's a sad day, especially that the woman got a settlement over the fact SHE SPILT HER OWN F**KING COFFEE ALL OVER HER SELF!!

Without common sense the world might as well be run by monkeys with Down's Syndrome-- Oh wait, it already is!

Did Common Sense ever exist? This strikes me as an another one of those mythical golden ages that most likely never existed.

There's a few people who have common sense. But there's more people who are just fucking stupid.

There's alot of left-brained thinking floating around now. There's always a price to everything, and our advancements in technology and complex thinking has stripped us of our instict, it seems like.

A simple answer to this problem would to be to build a giant starbucks coffee cup full of steaming(maybe boiling!), hot coffee and wait for the stupids to dive in and kill themselves. Like a mouse trap except with coffee. Or nuke them.

Very nice topic, btw sovay.

It pains me to admit it, but I have to say that it was I who contributed to the untimely passing of our once beloved friend. Just earlier today, I nearly sliced off my right ear after having a pretty close encounter with one of the blades of my RC heli.

Wind and close proximity is truly a potent combination :S

*sniff* May he rest in peace. I always wondered why he never returned my calls :( Now I feel awful for ordering that hit.

...

Wait a second, if he was dead before I made the deal, then why did I pay out 10k?!

$*%!(>_<

I don't think that Mr. Sense is dead, I just think that there are so many more people on earth these days that he can't get to everyone in time. This would explain things like, and yes this is true, a mercury thermometer having printed on its packaging "Do not ingest contents", because he just couldn't get there in time to stop someone from doing it.

Umm, about that coffee case...

There was actually a page with pictures somewhere around. I don't remember the link, though.

The unfortunate thing is that the link proves there was no common sense involved here. The woman is at fault for putting something that hot in her lap, while driving! But at the same time, McDonald's doesn't need to sell something so hot. What are they thinking? Oh.. they weren't.

I really hope that all the nonsense the current generation is causing has a reverse psychology effect on ours.
