The Last Guardian

I heard they weren't focusing as much on gameplay for this title as they did on Shadow of the Colossus. They're heading in the direction of simply "computer entertainment." Make or break? What do you guys think?

For those of you who have no idea what The Last Guardian is, it's this:

It's by the team that made ICO and Shadow of the Colossus and is about a boy and a baby griffon who rely on each other to do puzzles and kill these stone soldiers. In this interview I watched, it seemed that the game focuses a lot on interaction, art, and character development, with gameplay as a secondary aspect.

Not that this is an issue, but how do you think this next gen title will fare compared to other, more flashy and action packed games? I thought it worked well with SotC.

Discuss.

i dont know what this is. when you make a new thread you should include links and pictures or something bro. otherwise there aint gonna be much discussion

I've been looking forward to The Last Guardian. The atmosphere in the games Ico and SotC is what makes them so interesting to me. I haven't heard anything new about the game since the '09 trailer thou.
I don't think the last guardian will be as innovate as the other two games.
When Ico came out, leading another character around was a fairly new idea I think. Now almost every action game has some kind of escort mission. Shadow of the Colossus is just one of a kind. In other games I played the only time you scale a giant monster is though a series of quick time events, you know press "X" repeatedly during a cut scene to advance.
The last guardian looks like it'll be a lot like Ico only you're leading a giant griffon around an environment the scale of SotC.

I hope the story offers something unexpected.
Most people think the griffon is going to die in the end. It'll probably appear to die the way characters did in the other games. You watch the trailer and get the impression that its a "boy and his dog" story and those only always end one way.

^Yeah, I know what you mean. ICO was the game that got me back into gaming. I bought a ps2 because I had heard good things about it, and it totally lived up to its reputation. I loved every minute of it my first time through. But it hasn't aged very well. If I try to play it now it seems bland, like it's "been done before". SotC still feels very unique.

I'm not really exited about this game, it looks like a typical Japanese rpg with a lot of flashy graphics, great immersion, story and art but really weak boring gameplay. plus that griffin rat thing looks really ugly :barf: and it probably dies anyway.

its not even a rpg bro

it just looks like a baby thing, it's not ugly o.O

ever seen a baby bird? they're quite weird looking

it's cute in a "aw it will be pretty someday :3" sort of way

Yeah I but Ico and Shadow would probably let me appreciate last guardian a lot more, I'd like to play them but games like that are extremely rare where I live maybe, the majority of game shops are filled with violent shooters, racing and popular ( mainstream ) rpg's never really seen a rarity like ico lying around or any other cult hit. I've played way too many mainstream games I've probably lost taste for cult hit wonders and art games like Okami ( I've always wanted that game since forever but its just super rare! ) I kind of just gave up  and went with what IGN or GameSpot says is good.

I read about it on Wikipedia and Ico looks like one of those deep and touching games that are really more of an experience that you might never forget, also it has a very interesting story about the boy born with horns and how he's outlasted e.t.c. I know its not an rpg but I'm just saying Japanese adventure/rpg/puzzle games are usually the flashy kind not that they don't make hardcore games ( demon souls ) but in a way I'm jealous :|: .

I hope I could get my hands on all those Japanese cult hits I've always wanted, maybe then I'd stop being so bitter over it...
theirs always online purchasing

If you have a PS3 and still want to play Ico and Colossus, they're being re-released in HD in September as a pack. I'm not sure if it will be available in stores or if it's something you have to buy online, though.

I haven't played either of those games either, but they're almost universally praised, so I plan on getting the pack.

play them

esp SotC!!

I had never, and have never since, been so absolutely fixated/mesmerized by a game before.

the controls are hard to get used to, but after you do, you realize it adds so much to it!

its coming out on disc next month :D so pumped

I already knew this and I'm also exited, thats why I said I won't apreciate last gurdian without have played them, but thanks for the heads up  . I'm not sure I can get them online, my folks have issues with buying stuff online  ... Its actually safe if you don't buy from shady sites. I have a year here though then I'm going to university ( have to study hard for that soon ) but I'll hopefully get a credit card or something and then its games galore!

Oh and their also doing the same for the all the Playstation Metal-Gear games! Another reason I prefer PS3 is that they revive old classics. Xbox apparently shut down the Halo 2 servers or something...well theirs Duke Nukem but I heard it sucked.

Damn it! we never get a release for halo, unreal tournament or any xbox classics on ps3. Hideo's betrayed us! lol, actually I don't mind but I wish they could share their games with us too. now that I think of it most exclusives get released on both consoles after a while if not their squeals e.g mass effect 2, saints row e.t.c....

I'm now kind of exited about last guardian, I checked out some Ico and SotC game play on you-tube and they look really cool so I'm sure last guardians gonna be great ( at least from what I see so far ). plus after a while the griffin thing in Last Guardian dose start to look cute...kinda.

Umm... Halo is owned by Microsoft, and PS2 had Unreal Tournament game(s) if I remember, lol... that's like saying releasing the God of War collection or even the Ico/SotC collection on 360, it'll never happen because they're owned by Sony, Metal Gear Solid is owned by Konami, they can do with it what they like.
