This isn't me, this is other gamers who feel that the character is a projection of themselves.coyotecraft":ffrpm0t9 said:Aren't you taking the concept of role-playing a little too far? The character's sexuality isn't your sexuality. It's not any different from watching a female lead in a movie or TV show. Or reading it in a book.
I was taken aback when I first realised there are gamers who do this, it was with a HL1 mod called Yellow Shift where a user declared he can't play the game because he can't get-into-character as the player character was a black guy, I think he requested a custom reskin for the mod so the main character is white just so he could play the game.
He was declaring that it wasn't about race, it was that he couldn't get into character (But it is still pretty darn racist, people should have empathy on a human level).
That's the audience that games are up against, it's not a small section either it's the majority; lots of gamers won't play Tomb Raider because the main character is a woman and they feel they can't get into character as her.
So generally yes, a lot of gamers will take the character's sexuality and gender as their own and if they are uncomfortable with that then they will dismiss the game before starting it up.
