The Darkmourne Saga

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o182 ... a-Logo.png[/img]
Prologue

Introduction

This is a project I’ve been working on for a couple of weeks. It began as the testing ground for an event driven battle system, then inspiration hit me and I started crafting a fairly complex storyline and sketching out character plans.

My eventual plan is to release the project in eight chapters; each containing around two or three hours of gameplay, plus a short prologue to set up the storyline and introduce players to the setting.

The character graphics and facesets are placeholders. If I find somebody willing to create custom graphics, they will be replaced.

The Kingdom of Darkmourne was once known as a haven of tranquillity and peace. Thanks to its status as a prime holiday destination with endless streams of visitors, it eventually became a fairly wealthy land brimming with culture and excitement.

However, in recent years that has all changed. King Lanus III has deployed several hostile taskforces inside neighbouring countries, much to the displeasure of the general Darkmourne populace. This has led to a bitter atmosphere and a sharp increase in crime and random killings.

As the prospect of a full-scale war looms and the kingdom descends into anarchy, it is every man (and woman) for themselves in the land of Darkmourne.

Meanwhile, behind the locked doors of Wolfbane Manor…

Aurelia Wolfbane has never known the outside world. A childhood spent indoors has given her a slightly restless and mischievous streak, and she is relentless in the begging of her father; Lord Tobias Wolfbane, to allow her some measure of freedom. She has even gone so far as to attempt escape on several occasions, with little success.

Unfortunately, this action turned out to be counter-productive as one day she found herself being tossed into the Manor Dungeons by her own father without so much as a word of explanation.

An entire year spent rotting in a frozen, dusty dungeon with nothing but thoughts of resentment and despair to occupy her mind has only intensified her natural longing for freedom. So when a stranger arrives on the eve of her execution to present the opportunity of escape, she leaps upon the chance.

Now she must contend with the deadly traps and trained killers which populate the manor in great numbers. Can she escape with her life in order to rejoin with her newfound ally and receive the answers which are clearly owed to her?

Wolfbane Manor

This picturesque manor is located on the outskirts of Darkmourne Kingdom. It is home to the noble house of Wolfbane; a fairly young family whose roots can be tracked back to the turning of the last century. According to documentation, it is told that the first head of this household was a comrade of King Draemith, and saved his life during an ambush from werewolves. In honour of his bravery and faithful service to the crown, the grateful king granted his saviour a patch of land and the honourable title of Wolfbane.

The current head of household is this man’s grandson; a powerful man known as Lord Tobias Wolfbane. As a shrewd businessman and firm believer in justice and punishment of misdeeds, Lord Tobias has transformed his household into one of the most well reputed in the kingdom.

The prologue of The Darkmourne Saga is set inside this building, with the player taking on the role of Aurelia Wolfbane as she attempts to escape from her miserable life as a prisoner.

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o182/Dakashakk/Darkmourne%20Saga/AureliaPost.png[/img]

Aurelia Wolfbane
Age – 17 at the beginning of the series.
Weapons – Aurelia is proficient with swords, and her sentimentality often leads her to wield only one blade, upgrading it as her journey progresses rather than finding new weapons.
Class Description – At the root of her character, Aurelia is a thief. She relies on wits and cunning to overcome obstacles and defeat her enemies. However, it is possible to change Aurelia’s character development throughout the course of the game and make her more of a frontline fighter. It all depends upon the player’s decisions.
Backstory – Aurelia was born in Wolfbane Manor, and since then has never left. Her father; Lord Tobias, has always kept her trapped within his home and offered her no freedom. Because of this she sometimes resents her father, but also holds a deep respect for him.
On her sixteenth birthday, her father locked her in the deepest dungeon of the manor under the protection of his personal army. No explanation has yet been given for his actions, but the prison guards will seize any opportunity to make her life more miserable than it already is.

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o182 ... Post-1.png[/img]

Rosa Aluuvial
Age – 24 at the beginning of the series.
Weapons – Rosa finds violence distasteful, and therefore does not participate in combat. She carries no weapons, aside from an enchanted pen she received from a Demon filled cave during one of her previous adventures. This allows her to write curses in the air to damage or otherwise hinder her opponents.
Class Description – Rosa is a famous author, known throughout the Kingdom of Darkmourne and beyond for her scathingly honest assessments of famous figures and locations.
Backstory – Rosa comes from a working background, but you wouldn’t know it from her behaviour and manner of speech. She was born in the slums of Darkmourne’s capital city; Inaxet, to a blacksmith and his wife. From a young age she had a creative streak, and spent countless hours of her childhood writing fictional stories and coming up with magnificent settings.

When she turned fifteen, she met a purple haired soldier by the name of Ethan and immediately fell in love. The two dated for almost a year before her beloved was forced to leave her to fight a battle across the border.
Distraught by her loss, Rosa began to completely immerse herself in her writings, eventually becoming a journalist for the kingdom’s newspaper.

During this period, she began interviewing famous heroes and prominent figures in the Darkmourne community in the hopes that she would one day be given a chance to visit Ethan.

When she was twenty, she abandoned her job with the newspaper and moved on to writing and publishing books about legendary figures, often joining them on perilous missions and adventures in order to accurately document their journeys.

Her final published work revolved around Lord Tobias Wolfbane, speaking of his inherent madness and the depraved actions that take place behind closed doors. When the lord received a copy of her work, he was furious and put out an order amongst his soldiers to capture the young author. Since that day she has resided in the dungeons beneath Wolfbane Manor, waiting to be rescued by her knight in shining armour.

More to come…

Lord Tobias Wolfbane
Age – 44 at the beginning of the series.
Weapons – Lord Tobias Wolfbane is known for being quite a fierce warrior, favouring two handed blades. Though his weapon of choice is a broadsword, he is also proficient in the use of two handed axes and spears.
Job Description – Lord Tobias is the current head of the noble Wolfbane House. He is a firm believer in justice and honour, and under his command the Wolfbane house has grown immeasurably in both power and size.
Backstory – Tobias is the son of Lienseth; the previous head of the Wolfbane Household. From a young age he was tutored in the art of combat, often being beaten by his father when he made an error in his technique. This has made him a firm believer in discipline; a fact that both his family and personal army are forced to live with.

When he was 21 he met a young nurse by the name of Lilian and they were wed on the eve of his 22nd birthday.
The couple bore only one child; a girl by the name of Aurelia. As his sole heir she stands to inherit the family’s entire fortune and the title of head of household.

Tobias was disappointed at his wives failure to produce a male child and became more and more withdrawn as time went on. This led his devoted wife to sink into a depression from which she never emerged. When Tobias was 40, his wife took her own life, devastating the entire family and causing Tobias to become a virtual recluse.

It is often said that Tobias lost his mind when this occurred, and many politicians and officials believe that the house will soon fall with such an unpredictable man at the helm and the inevitable prospect of an unruly female being the next to take over the running of the family.

(Borco is a slang term for laziness in the kingdom of Darkmourne, so that would make this man's name 'Lazy Bill.')

As this project contains a custom battle system, I am going to explain exactly how it works. It was made entirely with events; more as a test to see if I could manage it than anything else. It still needs fine tuning and tidying up, but I am satisfied with the result.

Aurelia has two separate statistics; Strength and Agility. Agility is used to decide initiative, with a random number between 1 and 10 being generated before adding the value of her agility statistic. The fighter with the higher initiative result is given the chance to strike. A second number between 0 and 2 is then generated with the attacking character adding their strength value, and the defender adding their agility. If the attackers roll is higher than the defenders, they deal damage to their opponent. Skills are activated randomly as you attack the enemy, with the chance increasing as you begin to unlock more of them.

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o182 ... enu-SS.png[/img]

Selecting combat results in a regular combat round, beginning with the initiative roll.

Call Ally summons a friend to attack the enemy. The number of times this option can be used during a single battle is determined by the value of Aurelia’s Social statistic. Your allies attacks will be customisable in later chapters.

Use Item is self explanatory. Some items will heal Aurelia, whilst others will damage or otherwise inconvenience the opponent.

Attempt Escape has a chance of stunning the opponent, giving the player a chance to either open their menu screen to activate healing items without hindrance or escape from combat if the particular battle allows it.

• Create or request a title screen.
• Fine-tune the battle system, adding status effects and elemental weaknesses.
• Finish building the character development grid.
• Sketch out the personalities and backgrounds of the other main characters.

This reminds me of one of those "Tales of" games.

Either way, your grammar in the first screenie is a little off, but other than that your mapping seems good. Im not gonna go off and say the story is cliche cause I havent really seen one lately on here that isnt so oh well.

Good luck with this, seems like you put alot of effort into it.

The grammar isn't off, it's called good dialogue. Just reading that makes me want to play this game. I'll keep my eyes on this one.

Haha what? You're kidding, right? That's some of the best dialogue I've seen from any RM game.

This game looks pretty cool, i'll keep an eye out for it.

You guys are missing my point. It should be a comma instead of a period. =\

It has nothing to do with dialog, just the wording. Sheesh, learn the differance.

You should have said that in the first place ;P
Reading the dialogue makes me think that the period was on purpose. I'm not surprised if the period was used instead of a coma to make a similar effect certain poems do. If you say the line out loud with the period, it gives it even more depth. Think of it as 3 dots instead of one.

Guess that works, if that what he was going for lol.

Sorry for the confusion!

I really like the way you wrote the dialogue on the first screenie!!!
I'm looking forward to the finished product  :thumb:

I dunno, I think the dialogue in the first screen is a bit melodramatic, longwinded, pretentious, over-the-top (etc.)

The dialogue on the other screens seems pretty sound though so I'll pin that first one down to characterisation.

Thank you all for your feedback. However, that dramatic dialogue style is not used throughout the entire project. Aurelia is a noble, so tends to dramatise things and likes to overpronounce her words. Although a year spent in prison did a lot to toughen her up and make her a little more cynical. ;D

I've tried to take character backgrounds and personalities into account when writing dialogue, so don't expect a random guard to be quite so eloquent as a famous merchant. I just get tired of the usual RPGs where everybody sounds exactly the same and everything they say relates directly to the plot.

In other news, I just added a new screenshot to the main post displaying the dialogue that enables Colour Blind mode. Several of my friends regularly complain about video games and how they get stuck at one certain point because they can't tell the difference between a selection of coloured blocks. So I've added an option to get around that. This can be toggled on or off at any of the game's save points.

I am starting to make some serious progress on this project and hope to have another character bio up by the weekend.

I've been away for a few days, so I haven't been able to work on this project. But in honour of my return I've updated the topic with a brand new character profile.

I've just finished building my final map for this project, and now intend to spend the next few hours poking my battle system and adding a few extra features such as elemental weaknesses and status effects.

I'll update this topic as I make progress, so stay tuned.

This is very well written. I applaud your dialog, however, it's a bit unrealistic.

P.S I have an important figure in my game by the name of Ethan.

I noticed that you were in need of a Title Screen so I figured I would whip something up for you. :)

Hope you enjoy it!
I'm not exactly sure if it fits the style of your game or not, but I was just checking through your topic and seen that you still needed one so I figured I would help you out a bit.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

The project is looking great so far!

For this alone I love you so much. I applaud good dialogue - it makes or breaks someones immersion in a game, am I right?

What will actually be changed when colour blind mode is enabled? Will the crystals or whatever be different shapes instead?
