Tales of Phantasia

I know, I know... This game's a bit old. But this is not an option to start dislike it.:*)So who likes it? Who's your favourite character?

ToP for the SNES was good, and I respect it for starting the series off. However, Tales of Eternia was better overall. One thing that really bugged me about ToP (And other certain Tales of games), was the excessive screaming of names. To name a few:

DDDDDDDDDDHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOSSSSSS!!!! (ToP)
LEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNN!!! (ToD)
CLLLLLAAAAAAAIIIIIIIRRRRRRREEEEEEE!!!! (ToR)
STEEEEELLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! (ToL)
REEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAA!!!! (ToD2)

I never found it amusing enough to enjoy, and it was rampant throughout ToP. Also, the storyline itself was cliche, even at the time.

Tales of Phantasia is one of my favorite old-school, 16-bit games.

As I don't use emulators(o noez iligalzorz!11 ), I only got the chance to play it once the PSX version was ported to the GBA.

I liked the battle system, it was quite enjoyable. Except, I was about half way through the game game before I figured out how to change the lead character. :'( Stupid me. I also had forgotten that it was possible to guard against incoming attacks. Guarding was pretty useless, anyway, as it was needlessly annoying to pull off(it was probably just my GBA's L button, though.).

I was a little disappointed about how boring it was to play as Mint, or Klaus, especially before he learned his stronger summons. Of course, playing as Arche was cheap, 'cause all you have to do is fly up as high as you could, and start spamming spells. :p

In terms of story, it was quite well written. I'm pretty sure that, at the time of the game's release(the original, of course.), a lot of those story elements weren't so cliche. The characterization could have been better, but it was good for its time.

All in all, it's my favorite Tales game, next to Tales of Symphonia. Well, that's not saying much, as the only other Tales game that I've played, besides those two, is Tales of Legendia. I hated that thing.

Oh, and on a weird side-note, I'm not sure if this was the case of every copy, but on my copy of TOP, all of the voice clips for Suzu's techs were switched around. Like, she'd say "Flare blitz!", when she was using... whatever the thunder attack was called. O_o

Edit:
Megaflare, that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic. -_-

A friend of mine has this for the snes. Maybe i'll have to borrow it from him, because i'm slowly becoming a tales fan. It's probably the battlesystem.

You, and your friend can read Japanese?! I'm jealous.

Also, Tales is a great RPG series, especially if you like interesting characters. You should try Tales of Symphonia, if you already haven't. Not only is it the considered by many to be the best Tales game, it's a terrific game, all together.

Agreed. Tales of Symphonia is amazing. I would even argue one of the best jrpgs I've played.

It's third best on my list. Right below Dragon Quest VIII, and Final Fantasy IX, in that order.

I don't think that I've ever seen character development go as deep as in TOS. Plus, great voice acting! :D

Oops, I meant GBA (i've been playing Super Ninja Boy alot lately). Sorry. And another note, I own Tales of Symphonia (playing through it right now), and i'm loving it. Combat seems fast paced, and the battlesytem is awesome. Sorry.

I also own Radiant Mythology on the psp, and I enjoy that as well, Sorry.

I forgot to say my favorite character! It's actually a pretty tough choice... Either Mint, 'cause she's got an awesome name, and 'Time stop', or Arche, because she's the life of the party! Plus, Extinction rocks. :D

I hated Phantasia.  I played the PSX version around the same time I bought Wild Arms and I never played it again until the GBA version came out.  I would have enjoyed it more if the random encounter rate wasn't so ridiculously high.  The game was also about 10 hours longer than it should have been.  Also, the Tales series (up until Symphonia) always had a problem with ridiculous puzzles and poor direction.  I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who walked into Moria before getting the fire spirit because there was only one NPC who hinted you couldn't go any further in Moria at the time.

yeah, I kinda did that, too. I still thought it was a pretty fun game, anyway, though.

Don't let Dopples hear you say that.  :P

ToS was one of my favorites too.  I instantly fell in love with Kratos -- he's just such a badass -- and Lloyd is such a dork you can't help but love him.  Same goes for Collette and Genis.  Definitely a game I have no qualms about playing over and over again.  ^^;

Does Dopples not like ToS? That's crazy!

I loved Genis, and Zelos the most. Those guys are so jokes.

Dopples DESPISES ToS.  Give him a chance, and he'll rant for hours.  :x

YGO sucks Atemu, even the japanese version. OH SNAP!

But yeah, I have a general disliking for ToS AS A TALES OF GAME. As a standalone game, it's better then the other crap that's on the Gamecube. I will, however, say that Tempest was MUCH worse.

My favourites are Arche, Cless and Chester. Arche's really the life of the party. ;DShe reminds me of me with her pervert humor.  :D Have you seen the anime series of it called ToP - The Animation?

Yes, Tales of Symphonia sure is great. I love it. :D Have you seen the anime series from it? :)

Hmmm i liked Tales of Destiny taht waas so good and funny like the part when you find the dark magic book and Phillia catches you and knocks you out that was funny but the last boss was way too easy maybe because i was lvl70 but i killed it without attacking me but overrall i really liked it
