Tales of Phantasia is one of my favorite old-school, 16-bit games.
As I don't use emulators(o noez iligalzorz!11
), I only got the chance to play it once the PSX version was ported to the GBA.
I liked the battle system, it was quite enjoyable. Except, I was about half way through the game game before I figured out how to change the lead character. :'( Stupid me. I also had forgotten that it was possible to guard against incoming attacks. Guarding was pretty useless, anyway, as it was needlessly annoying to pull off(it was probably just my GBA's L button, though.).
I was a little disappointed about how boring it was to play as Mint, or Klaus, especially before he learned his stronger summons. Of course, playing as Arche was cheap, 'cause all you have to do is fly up as high as you could, and start spamming spells. :p
In terms of story, it was quite well written. I'm pretty sure that, at the time of the game's release(the original, of course.), a lot of those story elements weren't so cliche. The characterization could have been better, but it was good for its time.
All in all, it's my favorite Tales game, next to Tales of Symphonia. Well, that's not saying much, as the only other Tales game that I've played, besides those two, is Tales of Legendia. I hated that thing.
Oh, and on a weird side-note, I'm not sure if this was the case of every copy, but on my copy of TOP, all of the voice clips for Suzu's techs were switched around. Like, she'd say "Flare blitz!", when she was using... whatever the thunder attack was called. O_o
Edit:
Megaflare, that had
absolutely nothing to do with the topic. -_-
