Tales of Balken(Introducing Fiora!)

OKay this is my first glance at it and i like it so far. I did notice that the blober dudes (or w/e) seemed a lil out of place like was metioned. i think it's the outline and the one map was a little squareish. verything in nature has a pattern. a complex pattern but it does. always one thing to look at with games in my opinion. i'd just tear a little off the cliffs in places on that one. i didn't see anything personally wrong with the tilesets though

I had been forgetting to update the screenshot thread with the updates, but thank you for reminding me good sir!

I've updated both the cast screenshot as well as the cursed cliff. Although I still do not see it as perfect, I would say it is at least near the limit for the tileset to produce a natural cliff.

As for the slimes (or blobs as some like to call them), how might they fair now with the new sprites jbrist assisted me with? I understand they are colorful, I may experiment with lowering the color contrast on them to make it seem more natural; but would that be the only issue?

Hehe... Magix Music Maker? I'm using it too... :cute:

The concept is pretty nice. I also like the floating titlescreen buttons. The condoms slime characters are making the game special. I think that if there would be no condoms slime characters, the game wouldn't stand out from the crowd. The music also fits great into the game. The 2nd screenshot (cliffs) needs some work, or you could use the breeze tileset, it's also nice for a game like this. :wink:

And people are talking about my tileset here... lol xD

As for the music, I did not make it myself. But I spent a good week finding the perfect melodies and works for the game, and will justly credit those whose music I use. Though I 'did' make the small melody at the splash screen from scratch, but that isn't too much to brag about. :smile:

I am doing my best to find a way to make that cursed cliff seem to fit better, one of these days.. one of these days! -Wags fist-

Thank you the interest and the kind compliments! I'm doing my best to polish off the intro and work out some features in the battle system to hopefully make the game more unique and enjoyable to play.

The above is a useful tutorial on the mountain tileset, see if it helps you out. (the images don't display properly so you need to copy them into your browser to make them work)

I had been reading/watching some tutorials out there and hadn't seen this one, I do believe this just may help!

I most likely am simply going to remake the entire map since as it stands right now it's not very salvageable, but it will still be a cursed large cliff alright!

Thank you for the support everyone! That really helped kick me in the rear and get back to work. :thumb:

I had been taking a week long break to enjoy some fresh air but now I'm back and ready to get things done!

As a more of a motivation drive to keep me going, I came up with this!

So from then on, I should be keeping everyone updated with all interesting updates, or maybe just a goof-off clip if it was a slow week. :wink:

And so April 6th comes!

The game had a great boost of progress made to it this passed week, with a pleasant script surprise assistance from jbrist to give the cutscenes that added flare they had been needing.

For this week's update, I'll be introducing:

Klime will play an important role for our heroes early on in the game, without his assistance they would not make it very far! So remember his face and remember to use him well, as well as his followers.

That is all for now, next week we'll be introducing more of the humans of the forest that play an equally important part of the story as well!

This game looks amazing from what I see of it. To be honest, its one of the few games on .org that I'm looking forward to. The style and presentation look very fluid, although I might suggest you consider breeze rather than RTP as a style, as it would seem like a better fit for the game.(I won't mention the others for the sake of chivalry)

Edit: Damn it, its already been said. Fuck me and my not reading the thread.
 
Your game look adorable and I like the Klime dood. Have you thought of maybe making your own tiles and whatnot to match the breeze tilesets. That way, you can fill in what you are missing.

Well that certainly sounds like quite an honor! The fact that there are fellows that are truly anticipating the game gives me even more a drive to get to work harder in completing the task! I hope I do not let you down!

I have toyed with the breeze tileset before as stated (which I believe you've read by now though :wink: ) and it just does not seem to flow well with the game.

If worse comes to worse, I will either buckle down and spend a good time attempting to create a tileset of my own from scratch; if that continues to fail me I will see about enlisting the help of some aspiring pixel artists who might be interested.

Time will tell!

I have considered this actually! Though as it has stood so far, all attempts at accomplishing that task has deemed no results. I'm afraid the pixel artist which lies dormant within me does not wish to budge. That cursed lazy scoundrel!

Honestly I prefer the RTP style to it.
Then again I myself hate the breeze style, just argh I dunno I find it gross.

Klime to me makes me think of the whole reason the humans are attacking the slimes and therefor your charactes.

I must say your stor is so simple and yet so far it captivates me. I really do hope you put a lot of effort into the storyline! I think even a Wall-e approach to the slimes would be beautiful. (little dialogue more emotion, discounting humans of course who talk and talk... like me)

That little anouncer idea is a good way to keep people on track as well as remind youself to work on the project.

Something that would also place it in a more unique catagry is some form of ummm race I guessed you'd call them that they are friendly with. (I mean totally friendly as in no chance of backstabbing and glares like most games)
Since the slimes are a liguid matter race maybe a as matter race would be a nice touch.
Though it would be very difficult to incorporate.

Also did you need any help with you're title?

Hmm, I had never actually thought of an ally race for the slimes. That could always be a possibility! I'll toy around with it and see what I could come up with and see if it fits into the story well enough. Thank you!

As for Klime, you might be right. :wink: But that is all up for discussion as I don't want to give away the story just yet now!

By title, did you mean the logo? If so I was wondering if I should get around to doing it myself or finding a fellow who'd be interested in it for me! The only thing is, the title may be changing from 'Tales of Balken' to simply 'Balken'. I was unaware until last night that the name itself was deterring folks from even looking at the game due to the 'Tales of' series and them believing it to be a common cliche.

But if you'd be interested in trying to whip up a title in your spare time, that'd be quite helpful! Thank you very much for the offer! :cheers:

If you do, could you simply make it 'Balken' per chance? I also wanted to make sure it fits in with the title screen (the one in the youtube video on the OP) as well, we don't want colors to clash now! :biggrin:

If you're still willing to try making a breeze-style tileset, then Grathea wrote a tutorial here. I think that this game has potential, and I like the cute slimes! Are you going to unmask he announcer after the game is finished?

This is very possible! Though I warn you good sir, you might not like what lies beneath. Sort of like seeing an e-girl in real life for the first time.

I won't use the actual breeze tileset, I know that. But I may end up having to devote a few weeks to making a tileset myself and then remaking all the maps again. To be honest, I would love to try and use Piggman's tileset, that is a bloody work of art!

Though time will tell I suppose.
