Swine Flu - Should we worry?

I'm not worried about some swine flu. I live in america, we'll have a cure soon. Just like bird flu (H5 N1) this will pass over. People die from the normal flu every year. People only panic because it's something new. Flu viruses mutate after it kills too many people. It can become less deadly on its own. A Virus can't live long without a host (human animal etc.) so it mutates so it won't kill the host (so i've heard). Anyway just wash your hands alot and don't kiss pigs.

yeah, from the looks of it, the swine flu *might* be less deadly overall than the normal flu is... just with a bit more severe symptoms - not life threatening unless you have health issues or a near-death body lol. 13,000 cases of the flu so far this year, less than, what? 2000 of the swine flu so far? don't know the death toll for the normal flu but h1n1 is at 30 world wide.

and yeah, when i heard of it being compared to the black plague some time ago - i seriously laughed when I heard that, thinking it was a joke.

Idiots misinforming the uninformed. Uniformed person too lazy to find out for themselves turns into misinformed idiot. This is how Idiocy is spread. Welcome to the human race.

Which is why I'm continuing to say, do the research before completely believing something.

But nobody knows what the future holds, nothing is set in stone.

Amen.

Yes.

For those of you that got the joke, please feel free to breed in hopes that some of your offspring with the very rare trait of "common sense" will mix with the throngs of senseless idiots that now crawl the web.

For those of you that *didn't* get it, go home and slap your father for not making you shovel character building snow when you were a child.

It has become 62 here and the government isn't doing anything about it.

Anyway, who cares. Personally I am not afraid of that flu at all. Something and it will pass.

i lol'd

- we have never cured the flu or the avian flu or the swine flu. all we can do is strengthen the immune system against them to lessen the numbers of viral strains in your body. and we're even still pretty crummy at doing that.

- flu viruses can live up to 2 days on a non-porous surface outside your body. in a porous surface it can be much longer, depending on the conditions.

- viruses mutate constantly. but the mutations are typically so minor it makes no immediate effect. and there is no such thing as a symbiotic virus (or, atleast, no such thing as one adapting itself to HELP its host). when it mutates and "evolves" into a new strain, it is doing so as an adaptation to get the upper hand on what is killing it: your immune system. i.e. it is becoming more powerful against you.

pft what is with all these whiny ass people getting the flu.

i mean if your little kid or your grandma has it, or if you live in squalid conditions, ok.

but come on. a healthy adult in a clean environment only needs to take a few days off from work, get plenty of rest and fluids, and chug nyquil. this strain is only a little more powerful than the regular flu, and people get that shit all the time. hell i just had the flu last month. big whoop. what a bunch of pussies.

Biological attack is likely, there are a lot of considerations to take into this topic.

Ultimately - yes it is something to worry about; however, it is considerably unlikely to effect you directly.
It's important to realize that this is a media hype - regardless of anything. The media always exaggerate - its more or less what keeps people entertained and watching. I don't actually watch Television *Gasp!*. So my knowledge of this is reasonably limited and mostly word of mouth. From what I understand it is simply another flu which we have not built an immunity too. Oddly enough I know people who have been quarantined where I live for the flu (Gold Coast. Australia) however it has not been confirmed that they have it. Pain in the ass if you ask me.

Really if it happens then it happens, theirs no point worrying about it now. We'll cope with it or we won't. Unless some of you fine talented people know enough to start developing a cure to the common cold then there is really nothing you can do.

Worst case scenario question:
Why live the final days of your life in panic rather than enjoyment?

Edit: Excuse my fuzzy logic - I'm 7 drinks into the night and its 5 am... I don't entirely actually agree with what I said o.O

The news was today using the incredibly flawed logic of exponential growth.

They said there were 1,000 new swine cases one month and 10,000 the next. That July there will be 100,000; August 1,000,000; September 10,000,000; and by October the entire UK would be infected.

Bunch of absolute twats imo.

I mean first of all even if everyone in the uk got swine it would not be at the same time.

Secondly exponential growth cannot be determined by two pieces of data. For all they know, if it is a mathematical chain, it could just be going 100, 1000, 1900, 2800, etc.

yeah so uh, people still have this shit or what? i dont watch the news. mainstream media can choke on a dick. all i know is when it was fist starting to happen we sold out of hand sanitizer in like 10 hours, and i work at target. we had a lot of that shit on the shelves. stupid fucking people dont realize that hand sanitizers kill....bacteria, the flu is a virus. fucking baaAaAaAaah little sheep bahh

OK now, seriously, this is one thing I am worried about. About a month ago, a school round the corner from me (Handsworth, Birmingham, UK) was shut down and the whole place was hosed because 1 child had come into that school infected. 44 children were diagnosed from that school. No-one died, but if its THAT infective, then surely its something to think about.

Hmm. Well, I go through handsworth regularly  but honestly, considering the caught-to-death ratio there was 44:0 and in all hardly anyone has died I don't see it anything to worry about. Yes, it is likely you'll catch it (by likely I mean more-likely-than-winning-the-lottery, not likely as such), but it's highly unlikely you'll die.
