Summertime on .ORG

THIS SUMMER ON .ORG

Not to downplay the hard work of the rest of the admins, I'd just like to say I am now an admin again and ready for action.

There is a big plan for the near future but that's all I'm saying, it will be cool but it's probably a bit off yet a while.

Other than that the reason I am posting this is:

What do you want on .org?

I realise I failed you hard with the resource manager, wiki, pastebin, etc. I made the mistake of using a bad web host and trying to make .org something it's not. We are a forum, and any new things should make use of that. What is a resource manager but a forum where you can't chat? Chat is the best part of the resource forums.

What I want to know is what do you miss that's been lost over the years? What do you want that could be imagined? Or is everything fine!

State of the Site

We're doing pretty damned fine at the moment. People are talking to each other, we have good mod-member relations, IRC is picking up nicely again and the rec room doesn't dominate. We have some great threads and such.

At the moment we have the great workshops going on - if you need to know more you should check them out!

So what is this announcement?

It isn't so much a "this is what's coming: x" announcement.

This is to say, if you have any suggestions, no matter how amazingly over the top, post them. Either here, or in the feedback forum.

We're motoring again.

Workshops
We are doing workshops, as you guys may of noticed. Every 2 weeks, a new workshop is posted and members can test their mettle and learn about new stuff.

writing workshop and contest please
and not a free for all, do it or not, no one did anything fails sorta thing :P
collaborative project anyone? I remember the site did something like that, and it was handed to devy or bacon, and never got finished
intersite actions? force someone to learn php/html/etc.?
I'm just thinking of "hard" actions we can do, particularly to revitalize the creative sides of the forums (ie, art, games, etc. parts, which are sorta weak imo).

The artwork forum has become more of a well artwork forum and less of well... a resource forum. I still am very unhappy with the state of that section of the site. I still think it's too broken up. And it's really geared more for art in general. I think it needs to be reworked so that it's for game resources again and less mixed up with just artwork in general and pixel art or whatever is going on with it. The activity in there is extremely low still and the original problem there still exists. I used to really like that section back in the day but I feel like it's gotten really lost and don't even bother visiting it anymore which is a shame.

sorta agree; what happened to creativity forum? Even if it woudl be a lot more deadish, seperating the resources from the creativity would prolly help.

That was Pass It On. The reason it didn't do so well was that the deadlines were too long and lax, and it lost interest before it ever finished. It was definitely a good learning experience and a fun thing to do, and there's nothing wrong with starting something like that up again.

How 'bout dem .ORGies?
We were thinking of booting these back up later in the year, November/December time. They're definitely still happening.

Definitely agree with you here - game resources and creative arts should not be lumped together, especially with the weird system we have right now. Resources should be their own forum, not a subforum under Artwork.

I would quite like to have a resource forum again. I guess the problem is some threads can go in both, and the critique is mostly the same; although I see the point entirely.

Workshops? Such as Scripting or Spriting workshops?
That would be beast.

It should be exciting! I'm going to do a discussion of color use in pixel art and then maybe another one later about general pixel technique. Maybe I should do the pixel technique one first, but the skills are separate enough that I feel they can be worked on separately, and I consider color my area of expertise.

As for the art forum, yeah, I agree it's dead. I've been considering merging Edits & Rips with artwork, but it's really hard to undo if we decide it was a bad idea. I honestly wouldn't object to merging all of the subforums into one board, but iirc people started freaking out last time I suggested that. Thoughts? And what other suggestions do people have?

I wonder if there is some way to use the one board as both a pixel art critique and a game resources board, by using flags.

Clicking resources would only show resources, but clicking pixel art would give both.

I think it would be easy to do, with topic icons or something, but is it a good idea?

(Relating to Raven's post I mean).

I'd be sad to lose the pixel art board altogether, it used to be good. But we should have a resources thing too.

Do people actually go to the forums looking for resources to use? Because I always thought no one did. But if they do, resources that people are allowed to use and resources that people aren't allowed to use should be separate.

When I first came here, I was looking for resources.

(That's how I met Star, actually - but 'tis another day).

So maybe some might.

I don't actually like going through forums to look for resources. I like going through categories like what RRR or Creation Asylum have. But that's just me. I like clicking on XP, then charactersets, then RTP or addons. It helps me a lot. ^^
