Strange computer problem

I have this problem that's happened twice the past week and a half or so. I'll just be browsing the internet, when all of the sudden my screen turns completly white. Even though I can't see anything (including the cursor), it seems that I can still click on things that were running (EX: I have a program running and if I can guess where my cursor is I can click save and i'll hear the little comfirmation sound but see nothing.). The only thing that fixes it is if I turn it off using the switch. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

This is a strange error, this may be caused by surges through your computer. If you ever worked during a thunder storm and had the computer plugged in without a anti surge extension this may be the cause. I'm not sure if that's the exact problem but I had a similar problem like this which fried my hard drive and when I replaced it fried it too.

I don't know if that would be it or not. Both times that this happened the power didn't go off. I'm using a laptop and yes, the power has gone off a few times while it was running, but it still stays on because it switches to the battery. Right now this problem isn't REALLY bothering me much seeing that it's only happened twice in the past three weeks or so. But I would still like to know what might be causing it.
