starting to learn game making

I'm interested in starting to learn game making, but unsure where to start? I know there are a lot of freeware game making programs, such as Game Maker, that help to create games, but unsure where to begin. What would you recommend me to start with? Should I even bother with freeware programs like Game Maker?

I started with RPG Maker XP myself, and tinkered with that until I learnt Ruby, which is the language the engine uses. It was a nice introduction to game making I think, mainly because Ruby is an easy programming language to begin with.
I'm not too knowledgeable about any other applications though. This is just my two cents. :thumb:

Makers like RPG Maker are good for getting right in and making your first game without having to know too much, but the trouble is then going on to a better engine and dropping bad habits learned from it. Game Maker's good if you know what you're doing (but also good to learn and has a lot of good tutorials). I would start with freeware or cheapware though rather than going straight in to a big engine.
