Star Trek 2009

so I saw it this weekend and I gotta say I got mixed feelings about it

sylar did a decent job as spock, but sometimes I got the feeling that he was playing the sylar character, not the spock one. they're both similar in that unemotional aspect of things, but sylar has that special intrigued crazy look in his eye, like he's playing with live game before eating it. maybe I'm just too accustomed to the guy playing sylar, but I caught spock making that same expression a couple times -- spock is supposed to look really calm iirc, the whole "he will cut your skull open and do something to your brain" expression doesn't do it for the character

it struck me as strange initially that they sort of rebooted the franchise, and the way they seemed to spell it out to the audience seemed a little obvious (although for someone who's familiar with the franchise and could have gone "wait that doesn't happen.........hmm wonder whats goin on" before that point, I expect it'd be less jarring.) I can see why they did it, though. the star trek continuity is pretty huge right now (how many seasons of how many different series did they run on it?) and sliding a new movie in near the beginning would have been tough if people had to take into account everything that was supposed to happen and be remembered after that point. this way, not only do they not have to worry about the die-hard fans crying for a retcon, but they can develop the various characters in new ways. if they had stuck with the old continuity, they would have had to develop the characters along the same lines that have been there for like 20 or 30 years.

the movie itself was decent. I'm not a star trek buff at all; someone who's more familiar with the series might have had a bit more fun with it (some people would probably cream themselves when Nimoy comes onstage,) but to me it was a pretty standard action movie. not amazing, but not bad either.

and man am I glad they worked Nimoy in but not Shatner. guy is a major dick.

also did anyone find it weird that Sulu says he knows fencing, but then in the scene right after that they give him a straight-up japanese sword? is that from the original series. or were the directors just going "hmm well hes asian so...."

it kind of struck me as a power rangers moment. I sort of laughed

ahaha you are the best person ever. i was waiting for someone to say this.

my friend sitting next to me, who is asian btw, turns to me and says "racist fucks" when he pulls out that katana looking blade. i lol'd for a bit.

That part was pretty cool though, gotta admit.

Yes, he is, like, a master at fencing but he doesn't have ninja skills like in this movie.

Being a fan of the series, I was quite interested about this movie when I saw a preview. We finally got to see it last Suday and it. Was. AWSOME! At first I was woundering why it wasn't going with TOS but the ending clarifyed that. The only thing I didn't like is they screwed up the Next Gen countinum. Since Vulcan never
blew up, so to speak.

you should actually put it in a spoiler tag since idk what you're getting at

the movie uses a separate continuity, though. the characters themselves refer to their timeline as "like an alternate universe." it follows that anything that happened in the movie or happens from this point on with that canon doesn't interfere with existing star trek continuity

man look at what people have done they've got like a million writer working on the same universe and now they're having to invent separate realities so that people can just avoid tripping over their own feet

Spock Prime did come from the original continuity, but that continuity has been put aside as "Prime Universe" now the timeline has changed and everything from 2233 has been altered, this movie is as much a sequel as it is a prequel

On a side note, I do still intend to put my review up I just haven't gotten around to writing it up yet.
