Spriting question

Neither is the right or wrong way.

You don't have to worry about consistency if you have a good drawing style- it'll happen naturally.

It comes down to whether you want quality or quantity- essentially speed. Making a template will allow you to produce your sprites a LOT faster, especially since you'll be able to re-use and re-color different parts to create more sprites with less effort.

On the other hand, if you take the time and really individually draw each one, the results could be truly spectacular.

I'd say try both appraoches, do your main character in both ways. That way you'll know how each one feels and you'll be able to better judge which you'd rather use for making an entire game's worth of sprites.
