Sprite critique please? (And help settling a debate)

I've just recently picked up my game project again after a year or so and right now I'm working on revamping the sprite for the main character, because my first attempt, while not completely terrible was...unfortunate. I was going to wait until I finished the whole set to post for critique, but now I also have an argument to settle, so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. The old one is a sort of mish-mash of frankenspriting and stuff I added myself, whereas the new one was done on a blank template.

My husband insists the old sprite is better, and I think the new one is. What do YOU think?

Also, any suggestions for improving the new sprite would be very, very welcome.

Well I think the newer one looks less chubby ^^; ('cept in the face.) The jacket stands out more and so does the shirt, IMO also the hair's slightly better. The only thing I think the first one does better than the second is the pants stand out more as pants. In the second one the pants kinda look like a skirt to me.

To make the face look less chubby, perhaps if you soften the hair a bit and make it curve along the face instead of hanging striaght down, it'd work?

There needs to be a little more shading under the hairline, and the palettes for the white coat and the boots need a lot more contrast.

Um I would say the second one would fit better with the rest of the Enterbrian RTP sprites. But I'm not a spriter so I cant tell you... Wait actually I can! They both look really good!
