Soundsnap -- No longer free!

To some this is old news, but I just recently came across the site to see this.

Soundsnap.com used to be an extremely useful site, especially to game-makers and movie-makers on a budget. This site was amazing as for its large collection on sound clips and for its quality and ease of use, allowing users to view clips right within the same window, opposed to other sites which require the user to open separate windows to view the file. This new method allowed the user to browse the large quantity of sounds fast and switftly, with easy downloads of multiple formats totally free.

Recently though (Dec, 7) the site has become commercial which requires users to spend around $30 a month for about 100 sounds. This change to a commercial idea will hurt many small games and movies that benefit off the free market.

Personally I am disgusted, I understand that the makers of the site and the contributors would like to have been paid for their work but I always thought of soundsnap as a resource hub that was made for the small guy. Not only did they switch from totally free to commercial, but also their new price is outrageous. $30 a month for 100 sounds? Maybe if it was a smaller price then I wouldn't be so frustated but $30? Holy moley!

Sorry, to come off so brash, but I am very angry at this new move. I personally used the site frequently as it gave my games and movies an edge. Having unique sounds for certain actions instead of the default rtp.

Does anyone know of some good alternatives?

I can't think of any good alternatives (And I've looked, trust me), but I also think the prices are outrageous. I think they looked at their server load and thought "OMG! We've got so many people coming here! This stuff must be really valuable! Let's make some money!" So, they started charging for it. Pretty soon we'll have torrents of their sounds popping up, but then again, they may lower the price and the torrents may never appear.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo............

NOT SOUNDSNAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOD DAMN IT I LOVED THAT PLACE ;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;~;

I'd totally pay like $10 or something for unlimited sounds, because that place is MAGNIFICENT, but going from 100% FREE to $30/mo for only 100 sounds???? Seriously???

FUCK MAN this seriously pisses me off :((((((((((((

:/ yeah

well there's always freesound.org I guess :(

The sounds there aren't as high quality, but if you trim them and refine them they're pretty useful ...

I can't blame the guys for wanting to get paid for their work, but atleast start a little lower :/

Seriously, it's not even that modest of a price. I mean it's ridiculous.

I mean I understand them wanting to make some buck... but that is just greedy. Even with something as small as maybe $5 a month or like a $15 one-time pay. That way, they will keep most of the mainstream people. Seriously, I mean with this new price who will want to buy it? Surely not the homily game-maker. Not to sound cynical, but hopefully this new idea won't work as well as they think it would and they might lower the price.

Or maybe this will inspire someone to make a similar site for free... I dunno... thoughts?

I guess one way to get more than 5 songs would to create multiple accounts? Although this would be more hassle than worth at times. I'm not sure if this is against their policy?
