social networking f-friends ....

hey. join me on facebook so you can roll your eyes at my lame status updates. i might not have any idea who you are though. https://www.facebook.com/devin.emery.7

i also have a twitter account that i don't use for anything important. mostly i try and be clever though i'm not very funny https://twitter.com/#!/animal_math

AND BONUS i have a tumblr that i update never and have 2 people following me on. as you can see it's very important to me so make sure to check it out ty http://animalmath.tumblr.com/

I don't actually use any social networking sites anymore, but when I did, I had maybe 150 friends. I'd purge them regularly and clear out the people I barely knew, though. I just don't really want to know the intimate details of the lives of people I don't care about. I regularly talk to everyone whose life I'm actually interested in anyway. So that's one reason I left. Another reason was I got tired of Facebook flagrantly disregarding privacy issues.

- how many friends and/or twitter followers (or other social networking contacts) do YOU have?
FB: 270, LinkedIn: 89

- of that number, how many would you consider your ACTUAL friends?
(i.e. not your grandma who guilted you into friending, nor exes, nor people you only know from work, nor people who you hung out with a few times in middle school----i mean people who you have either hung out with recently [and wanted to], or who you'd get excited about hanging out with at any random time. bfs/gfs/spouses/family/coworkers count only if you honestly truly love spending time with them and you would also call them a friend.)

"Actual" is semantic. I consider most of them "friends". There are a few that I don't know, haven't met, or don't remember (high school).
But they range from ~a dozen "close" friends, to maybe ~50 "close acquaintances" (party with, hug when I see them, ...), then there's: people I would like to hang out with but don't because of geography or schedule, then people I would hang out with if coincidence crossed our paths.
What you're calling "ACTUAL", I think of as "CLOSE". It's a matter of perspective & philosophy. I'd like to think of everyone that is not my enemy as a 'friend' that I just don't know yet. That, however doesn't mean "blind trust", just benefit of the doubt.

- does your friend count affect you at all?

I had to look. The number doesn't mean anything to me. Other than the fact that I am blessed to have many friends. "I have people.... and I know stuff!" :scruff:

118 Facebook friends, and I know pretty much all of them personally, with the exception of maybe seven or so.

It doesn't bother me a bit. I approach social networking services with the mindset that they exist as a means to stay updated on semi-important shit going on (i.e. Gizmodo articles and who's sleeping with who), and as a means to text message people without the trouble of phones or email.

425 friends, though I suppose it's much easier as a teen growing up in the facebook era.

I would consider ~40 of 'em super close, a good few hundred or so decent or once-close friends, and the last 200 mostly acquaintances I've talked to once or twice or seen around school.

I know I have too many "friends" I don't care about (and have been thinking of doing some pruning lately), but as a social networking site it does seem a good idea to at least keep some people you know. For example, just this month an acquaintance chatted me about winning a scholarship to UC Davis (though I ultimately turned down the offer), even though she was a year older and we rarely talked, except for the one math class we shared. And in the future, keeping tabs on relations may be useful for jobs and such, which is why I keep many acquaintances on the list.

I don't use facebook or any similar communitites. I'm also really amused by person after person saying that they add way more people than they talk to, and at the end of the same page, they happily add more (however, I can see that the mainers in these forums probably will interact more with each other in social networks than the generic I-sit-in-the-same-room-as-you-in-college folks).

In general, I've been quite neglecting to the whole social media thing in general. I don't know if that makes me a rebel, as Venetia pointed to in her first post, but I just like to think that personal contact is enough for me. That being said, I'm more often glad to be left alone by all those pesky people wanting to do 5000 different things when I just want to spend time on something : (especially since I started playing MTG again, I got time for NOTHING  ).

To hinge on a similar topic: I'm also not a big user of messengers. I use MSN, and that's it. I have about 10 people on the list there, 5 of them I occasionally talk to, the other 5 I'm hoping to see online sometime again because I've lost contact. I've told enough people that I wouldn't like them to have my MSN contact information and that they should write me an e-mail or pm, so... I really am trying to keep the whole thing cleaned up.

Call me forever alone guy, but seriously... I wouldn't be happy with even those ten people writing me all the time, nevermind two-hundred.
And I like those people who were blarging about people sitting on the PC all day that now spend their lives in facebook... :blank:
