@Dopples: Nothing wrong with buying that sword for decoration purposes, though it might have slight beauty flaws... shouldn't be the case, though, but I'd still check out your local weapons store, as they usually have this kind of sword as well, and you can actually take a look at them there.

Untrue, man... Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu still use 'real' swords (called 'Shinken', but essentially being on the same level as a feudal counterpart), and they're still smithed all over the world. I'm also not sure if it's still used within the Japanese military, but I would say yes, at least the higher ranks. Then again, even those might just be Gunto, though...
