Skill related script request...

I want my characters to level up with a specific element by using items on them. For example, if i use 10 red crystal shards on my hero, his level with fire would go up one, and then increse his strength permanantly by 5, and allow him to use the spell Fire 1. Any ideas. Be aware, my ability to script from scratch is practically non existant.
