Skate vs. THPG

Alright people seeing as how the release of both of these games is coming really soon, its also divided up the skaters from the haters. And now there is a giant ass argument going on about which one is better. And as a fellow skater/gamer I figured I'd bring this up on RMXP. So to all the skaters out there which side are you on?
Tony Hawks or Skate's?

I for one am sticking by Tony Hawk because its the first skate game I got my hands on and really got my interests going in skate those many many years ago when I first popped Tony Hawks Pro Skater into my Playstation. But I mean its literally broken up couples, torn apart skate crews and everything. So pick a side and state your reason.

.::Makasu::.-Because Tony Hawk pretty much started it all, skate is a poor attempt at EA once again trying to move in on everything and they're generally going to mess up the Skating genre. Look at Def Jam: Icons and you'll see where I'm coming from. It boasts realism, but last time I checked in skateboarding when you bail you don't just magically appear back on your board. :p Very unrealistic for someone claiming to be, "One of the most realistic skating experiences you'll ever have." Its all a skam if you ask me and thats why I'm sticking with what got me going. Although I know Tony Hawk is far from real, but it'd be the more arcade style of skating as Midnight club is to Gran Turismo. Fun, fast, and not some boring ass attempt. While it may be beautiful. Thats probably the only thing its got going for it. If I want real skating I'll do it in real life. Not sit around and "flickit" Thank you much.

im sick of all the 'ITS UNREALISTIC AND ITS HARDLY ABOUT SKATEBOARDING ANYMORE ETC ETC".. it'ss just a game. @__@

if I had a console, i'd get skate tho, seeing as the thps franchise has been going downhill since after thug, and i've regretted buying each one since then.

@ Cruelty: Actually the franchise went down hill after Thug 2. American wasteland was complete crap, so was THP8 on PS. On PS3 though its awesome. And the demo for THPG was awesome!!! Well not awesome but it was pretty cool. Did you see the amount of customization they're going to have?!?!?! Its awesome. So I don't know I'm going to get both of them. I don't know though...I'm still a THPS fan and all of the people that played skate games played THPS first and foremost. Its like betrayal people. And who wants to have to ollie up every single curb and object. Shits gay.

EDIT: Direct quote from GameInformer, "I don't think ts quite ready to take down Tony Hawk...yet.-Andy"

Proof enough that Tony Hawk is still the king of skate games. Even if he has messed up a little. But hey no one's perfect. Remember that.

Although THPS is one of the few franchises to monopolize its genre (I've only seen about three skating game franchises, including THPS, and the other two were total crap), that doesn't mean it is the best there can be. I haven't seen the THPS demo, nor have I gotten a good look at Skate, but I for one am going to wait for their releases so I can find out which one is better when I get to try them, not before hand without any real knowledge of the new games, or even if THPS will be a step up from it's previously disappointing attempts at rejuvenating a now-aged-rotten game that I, like some of you, used to love.

I've been playing skate the past few nights... and I'm going to have to say it has WAY better gameplay than any tony hawk game I have played. I've been playing skateboarding games since thps1 on the psx, and Skate is the best I have seen.

It's so interactive, and an actual challenge. I'm going to say right now, it's not a game that is about reaching insane, unrealistic combos. All the personal satisfaction really comes from making something that has style to it. There are so many possibilities- its hard to describe.

You can't just roll over curbs, you'll have to use the right joystick to ollie up them. Grinding/stalling isn't about hitting Up + Triangle anymore... It's all about how you land on the rail with your board or trucks. This makes for a chance to pull out some great looking flip tricks into grinds.

You can hold one of the trigger buttons to grab, even while you're on the ground. This results in an "old school" skate style, where your character kneels down and shifts his weight to turn even sharper than before. It also helps you gain speed while bombing hills.

Theres nothing I can really think of that is wrong with the game so far... I don't mean to sound biased towards it over TH games, but I've really gotta say that this is the best skateboarding game that I have played... Project 8 was just glitchy as hell, and the same old shit over and over.

skate. for the win. THPS was the series that got me hating skateboarding games, but skate. brought me back to them almost instantly.

How's that now? I mean it started it all. But thats your opinion. I have to respect it. Although I have been playing the Skate demo like crazy [[I want to land 360 flips]] I'm still not liking it as much. But I have been kinda swayed. I mean it is fun, alot more realistic, but the camera is pure shit. That and the fact that you have to use the freaking square and X button to push off. Major turn off. I mean I spent like 30 mins [[the demo time]] trying to get used to using those two buttons instead of just being able to move the left analog stick forward. And did anyone happen to notice [[those who've played the demo]] that P.Rod looks really really fat? Yeah not cool. They ruined one of my favorite skaters. But I gotta give it to them the game is really addictive, but still I'm a Tony Hawk man all the way. I'm going to get skate on tuesday [[since the damn 360 version came out first]] just to see how it is actually. Another thing about skate I don't really like is the fact that you can manual forever but you can't flip trick to manual then flip trick to another manual. Which I know for a fact you can do in real life. I.E.

Kickflip - manual - Kickflip -manual.

Or maybe you can and I just suck eh? But yeah it is alot harder. I mean it took me a while to stop just doing pop shuv-its and move onto other tricks but still I don't really think the flickit goes all to well. Maybe they'll get it right in the next game and then they can take out Tony Hawk. And thats a huge maybe.

Skate is obviously the better game....but i prefer THPS because of the roots. I'll get both....skate takes getting used to....its not as player friendly.

I loved THPS1 thru THPS4 (for best, it's a toss-up between 2 and 4). After that, the series sucked big time.

How did you not like THUG or THUG 2? They were Amazing!!! The only real reason I liked THUG 2 was because you could actually have long hair and wear a hat at the same time! XD and thats when they introduced the 360 flip I believe. As well as it was a good game all around y'know? But hopefully when THPG releases it'll come out as a competitor with Skate. Hopefully. I mean I was playing the PG demo [[Proving Ground]] and noticed that the guy looked an awfully lot like a monkey. Lets hope they fix that. Either way when it comes down to it, Skates fun, I guess realistic enough, and quite challenging, but if you're looking for some arcade style fun then Tony Hawk is the way to go. Because if you want realistic skating you should get out there and do it yourself. Which is why I skate now. But still my opinion is swayed towards Tony Hawk. I guess we'll see tomorrow seeing as thats when skate comes out. Hopefully. :/

@Makasu about the guy being fat: Uh, I am sure that every skater on SKATE had to go to Canada to put on the little spandex suit with the little balls on it to get the character's base figure.

I played one straight after the other and skate was so much more interesting... bloody infuriating at first when i could barely do a grab trick but it got better as it went on.

Ive been playing The Tony Hawk series since around 1999-2000, on THPS2 (the best one I think) right up to Project 8, A friends roommate has skate, and it looks like it could be a lot of fun, The Hawk series is more high scores and huge combos down impossible runs, which is fun (very, fun) and skate is a more realistic game, which when you master it, is probably very rewarding.
