Silent Hill Movie(s)

Well, considering that there's a Resident Evil movie topic, I thought I'd make this topic. How many people actually liked the first movie, and have high hopes for the second one?

Anyways, I have mixed feelings about it. The special effects were top notch, and it stayed true to the source material. On the other hand, the acting was horrid, and the script made me go "wtf?". Overall, I enjoyed it, though it could have been better.

So what are your thoughts on it?

I thought the silent hill movie was good, but like you said the acting was somewhat iffy, why did they cast sean bean (an english man) to play an american when they could have hired an american?
he's a good actor but his american accent is hmm, crap.

the highlight being the hot female cop.
hope the second is good but haven't got that much expectations.

I enjoyed the first and I think the director did capture the look of Silent Hill. Unfortunately the narrative was kind of crap. Sean Penn's character was also wasted in the movie. I definitely would see another though. I am kind of a sucker for video game movies even if I know they won't meet my expectations.

Also at least the movie had some influence on the games. Silent Hill 5 will be having that transformation effect from Silent Hill into Dark Silent Hill from the movie. Those were some of my favorite parts from the movie so I am glad they are making it into the actual games.

Yeah, those transition scenes look great in the new game, though I'm sure they'll be a pit more polished in the final product. But anyways, from what I've heard, Silent Hill 2 has an actor casted for Claudia Wolf, so one can assume this is going to be based off of Silent Hill 3.

Hey, as long as Heather is the same as she was in the game, I'll be perfectly content with the choice, considering I was hoping for the movie to be based off of SH2 instead of 3.

They probably want to continue the overall storyline. As great as Silent Hill 2 was it didn't progress the overall story of the town much.

@ArtBane
don't you mean sean bean?
sean penn wasn't in this movie

I really like the movie. The gore satisfy me, although the ending was too sad for me. Doesn't mean that it's bad though. I just didn't want Cybil to die :'( They gave us a hope that she might survive and then crushed it right in front of you T_T. All in all I think it's one of the best video game movie I've ever seen.

I'm definitely looking forward to see the second one.

I'm sort of a SH purist and the fact that they made it so Alessa's mom wasn't the evil one sorta pissed me off. Also I feel like the main character didn't do anything at the end, which was also a little anticlimactic for me. But the monsters (especially P.H.) were awesome. I'd watch the second one just for the monsters, I think, but I hope they try to do something more true to the story arc than taking a preexisting story and f'ing it up.

I know they won't be true to the story, but a girl can hope :'P.

I liked how they basically combined the first two stories into one, but also created a twist of their own. They managed to stay true to the concept, while also giving the film a happy, yet mysterious ending. As I've said in other threads, I don't consider the Silent Hill Universe to really have canonical endings, since most of them have multiple endings, involving aliens, and I think in one case implying the main character was a robot. Because it was clear that they weren't verbatim copying any one game, instead borrowing elements from many to make something new, I didn't expect the resolution to mesh with any of the Silent Hill 1/2 endings.

Also, I loved the movie, and am looking forward to a second one (not directed or written by the same guy though, huh? Scary). I'd like to see better acting, but I think they got everything else exactly right. Best video game movie ever.

@ArtBane
actors names aren't my strong point either had to check incase I was wrong :)

Set ten years after the first film, Silent Hill 2 sees a now 18 year old Sharon (calling herself Kara) trapped in a shopping mall with a strange journalist called Brett. The pair find themselves running from an unimaginable terror, that leads them back into the town of Silent Hill. Once there the couple must find a way out, and Brett discovers there's more to Kara than at first he thought.

After the death of her adopted father, Heather Suthers finds papers in her father's closet linking her to the town of Silent Hill. Wishing to find out about her past, Heather travels to Silent Hill only to discover it has since been abandoned. Feeling exhausted, Heather decides to rest in a neighboring town. The next morning she awakes in a different room within the town on Silent Hill.

I found both of these plot summaries for the second movie on http://www.imdb.com. Wether one's true, both true, or both false, is up to you guys to figure out.

I quite enjoyed the Silent Hill movie, although I have never played any of the games. I guess that gives me an unbaised view towards the quality of the move. The monsters were cool, I liked the concept and the ending was confusing, but then sad when I worked out what (I think) happened.

Awesome Bro

I'm in the same boat as Anglachel. I've never in my life played a Silent Hill game (Shhhh Raziel :p), But from the amount of advertising and hype about the games that you see almost everywhere you go, I practically knew what most of the creatures were. Especially that really REALLY well thought out character "Pyramid head" Woah. I bet they had some sleepless nights thinking up that name.

The ending wasn't confusing, really. It was just a twist (That I did see coming tbh). It's a fairly straight forward (yet bizarre) storyline with effective results. And quite worryingly, My favourite part is when Anna gets her skin ripped off by Pyramid head. The graphics appear so shockingly real and I just was NOT expecting it.

If you played the games the ending wouldn't be as confusing. The main chick basically got the "bad" ending ;')

And SH:Movie wasn't so much an amalgamation of SH:1 and SH:2, it was just a bastardization of SH:1 with some monsters from SH:2. The entire plot is of SH:1 with a female lead instead up until about the last quarter of the movie, where it flies off on some tangent about a cult having nothing to do with the cult from the games (and the games' cult is a lot better as an evil cult, IMO), and that Alessa's mom is a "good guy" (and I thought she was WAY better as a bad guy).

There are "accepted" endings for each game. Obviously, the UFO endings and such are comedy, easter egg endings, and are not considered part of the storyline. It usually boils down to a "good" and a "bad" ending as being part of the plot (although for SH:2 there were two main "bad" endings, one worse than the other but even the "good" one wasn't that "good"). Either way the "accepted" ending swings doesn't affect the overall plot of the game series, that Silent Hill is growing, that Alessa's mom burned her alive and now Alessa is pissed, that a cult wants to revive the "god" through Alessa or the thing that's supposed to carry it.

Whether or not James dies in SH:2 has no weight on what happens to the plot (but it would have f'ed things up if Heather had a dying ending like he did). And SH:4 had nearly no bearing on the overall plot at all except for continuing the fact that SH, the town, is growing, and revealing a little about some of the other aspects of bad s#!t they were doing in the town.

The 1st game had some kinda lame monsters, though. Those pterodactyls, skinned dogs, and featureless meat-people were kinda uninspired. (except the shadow babies from the school ... Bwwwuuuhh~~~ I hated those). The second game had some EXCELLENT monsters in contrast and it's no shocker why they chose to use P.H., he's kickass.

Did anyone who played the first SH notice how, in the movie, when she first got into town, those first two scenes were IDENTICAL to the first two scenes of the game until she went into that underground factory-thing? Check out the scenery (the parked cars, the shops, the desolate road)! Identical. I was actually pleased with that, pretty nostaglic.

I did notice it actually. I remember there was a part in the movie where she runs down an alley and the camera shot was identical to the game. I was real pleased with moments like those.

I agree that the reasoning behind using the SH2 monsters was just because they look cooler. The monsters (at least some of them) in SH1 were based on Cheryl's/Alessa's drawings since at that time I guess the town was a representation of her just like the SH2 monsters were a representation of James.

The SH1 enemies were meant to be cliched, considering that Alessa was a fan of Fantasy books and Palientology (Excuse me if I spelled that weird). This would explain why you would expect to see those kinds of monsters in the town. Oh, and I think James LIVING would have had an effect on SH4. If James was alive, then he would probably have become involved with the murders, considering his dad is the superintendent. Though I dunno, he may have not shown up at all, considering Walter had no ties to him.

the movie was pretty good. it atleast tried to follow the main storyline. true, they replaced the main guy with a girl and dahlia, this time, was not the one who was making all these things happen (which wasnt so cool) but still the movie was pretty good. look at resident evil. they've fucked up every movie so far. its not even a horror movie. its more like an action one. it wouldve been so much better if they had based the movie on the same creepy mansion with chris, jill, barry n others. silent hill, on the other hand, proved much truer to its intended genre. definitely, the best video game movie yet :D waiting for the 2nd one.
