Should I buy RPG Maker XP?

Hello everyone.

When I first downloaded RPG maker I didn't know that it was a commercial program and not freeware like a lot of things are now-a-days. So inevitably I downloaded a pirated version and since then I have been working on several games with it. Recently when I started looking into scripts I found that the reason my scripts weren't working was because I wasn't using the real version.

Lately I've been considering buying RPG Maker XP (since it is like 732% better than the pirated version and legal too!) but before I do buy it, I have one question.

So my question is:
Can saved game projects that were made in the illegal version work in the real version? I'm worried that I won't be able to open any of the unfinished games that me and my friends have been working on. (I've tried opening projects created in the legal version in my not-so-legal version but it just gives me error messages-- will this happen the other way around too?)

Please, does anyone know for sure whether or not I'll be able use my saved games? Has anyone actually tried it yourself?
I don't really know where else to turn (I've already scoured these forums for any info-- to no avail).

I really need to be sure of this before I can make my decision to buy or not to buy.

Please, read my entire post-- not just the first paragraph-- before posting.

Buy it.

In the first place, yes, the pirated version doesn't work as well, and you'll have issues with scripts.

In the second place, Enterbrain should be encouraged to keep releasing English-language versions of their programs by getting our money.

And in the third place, we won't help you unless you do.

Yeah... I now know this but that's not the point... I'd like to be able to make an educated purchase rather than wasting $60 on something that will just waste my time by making me restart my game.

...Umm ok... Not my point either, even though its true.

I'm not asking for help either... Besides there are other sites with scripts I've been able to use and people willing to help.

What I need to know is will the old projects begun in the illegal version still work in the real version? Do you know?
I have a hunch that the answer is yes since the illegal version is like a old Japanese version but still...

It will work. The problems you will be facing though, is for instance when using illegal version, you get 4 lines in the Show Text function. If you used 4, you will still be able to use these, but you cannot modify anything beyond the third line. That's all I can think of. Though I still advice checking if it works if you don't want it if it doesn't.

You can go from illegal to legal, but you can't go from legal to illegal. That seems to be the common knowledge on this area.
I know that I were able to run open and run projects made with the illegal version. (The scripts indicated that the project was from the illegal version. Although it is possible that the script was copied to a legal version I find it improbable)
If you keep the scripts then the version of the editor should be irrelevant. I believe the save file structure has not been altered from the Japanese version to the English version. If this is true then you should be able to load old saves even if you replace the scripts.

You can use the batch entry in an event for entering 4 lines. You won't be able to edit the message properly afterwards though. (You can always make a new batch entry)

Buy RPG Maker XP.

Thanks a ton, Zeriab. I guess I'll go and buy it today seeing as how it should work with my saves. (I really didn't want to buy it then find out that I had to start from scratch anyways, but you put my mind at ease.)

I have never seen that in XP. Where is it? Maybe you're mistaken it for VX?

ctrl+n \ rightclick where you need to put event proccessing. (in the event menu, instead of pressing insert\duble pressing the blank thingy)

You know, some of that "common knowledge" is false. Specifically, the part about not being able to open official projects in pirated versions of the program. I've done it before. Still, for the sake of keeping my place at this forum, I won't say how, suffice to say its pretty easy if you know why it won't open.
