Setting max HP via scripting

I'm working on a game, and I need to know if there's a method of setting an actor's max HP via a script. Since I'm an absolute newb at scripting, I need your help. Thanks in advance.

The only real way would be to do something like so:

$game_actors[actor_id].maxhp = n

Replace actor_id with your actor_id and n with the new maxhp value. But it just gives a bonus to your maxhp calculation.
