Script Sought: Adding/Substracting Party Members

I would llike to know if anyone could help me with the following:

I would like, at one point in my game, to have the user be able to choose which characters he wants in the party. This, of course, means that at times he's going to have to replace members in the party for others outside the party.

How do I do this?

And, furthermore, what if -say- I wanted one character to be VITAL to the quest, so that character wouldn't be able to be moved out of the party?

Thank you for your help. I did look through the forum and I didn't find any similar requests or scripts.
