Old movies can never be scary because the effects were so cheap and terrible that it's just laughable.

you never watched the original the Haunting have you?

Nope, anything pre 1980 isn't even worth considering in my opinion, their camera and sound quality was terrible that the films were no longer enjoyable. Sure I might've missed some "good" films, but I can't stand how bad the quality of them was...

not all movies is good, fella! You just need to discover which ones that is good among the millions of horror movies. I try to look at as many as possible at my vacation now xD

lol what
you are keeping yourself from hours--days--weeks--months--years of entertainment.
besides, a nicely-done makeup job or a good prop trumps bad CG any day.
and are you only talking about horror films?? because there are a shitton of amazing movies pre-1980.
Also how is 1980 even a cut-off point; CG wasn't regularly introduced into movies until like mid-90's.

Who said I was talking about CGI exactly? I didn't say anything about it.

Read again, I said camera and sound quality was terrible.

what
what if they've been remastered
b/c back then shit was captured in analog and analog tape wears down over time. it's not that the quality was shit at the time, it's just become so after 20+ years of waiting until it became recorded digitally (also without remastering you lose quality when re-recording analog into any format, digital or otherwise)

only movei that's ever been scary for me, has been ... uh i think it's called "the strangers" where this married couple comes home from a party and people keep knocking on the door until they eventually break in.. always been a fear of mien

Seriously based on true events, or "based" the same way a lot of Hollywood movies are? If it was, then, ugh. That's horrible. I don't live in a particularly bad neighborhood but I still lock my doors and wedge a chair in the doorknob at night 'cause I'm afraid of stuff like that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the exorcist to be absolutely hilarious. When the little girl starts crab-walking down the stairs I bust up laughing while everyone is cringing. I'm not even that hard to scare, either. :x

in hollywood, "based on true events" basically means that one of the characters has a similar name and it was set in about the same place (but filmed off-location).

Really, movies based on true events, how can they be be SCARY?

I'd rather see those sci-fi/horror movies with mad laboratories, tottaly invented stuff is the best!!

I've always found the stuff that strikes closest to home to be pretty damn scary. The type of movie, book, whatever that makes you think, "What if that happened to me?"

Paranormal Activity was waay overhyped but I found it terrifying because it built up so slowly, introduced you to normal people and a normal situation, and then started making perfectly mundane, ordinary things into something incredibly sinister. It built up momentum, making the jump scares even worse because you were so damn tense. It didn't go *credit sequence - topless chick - BOO!*

Paranormal Activity is a good example IMHO of what horror ought to be. I found it to be much scarier because it focused on subtle things that made someone think something was going to happen, but it didn't...at least not when they expected.

Psychological horror is really the way to go if you want to make people that are older than ten scared more than just a screamer sort of scare. I'd focus on getting the atmosphere right first, then looking at opportune moments for a scare.

For a bit of fun, make a sort of beta of the game and install it on your friend's computer without their knowledge, making sure the shortcut is obvious on the desktop. Plant a hidden camera somewhere in their room or office and let the fun begin :boo:

Wow that's a great way seing a result of your horror game, well my horror game is a bit to the insane way, like in Alien, I am going to present human experimentations and torture devices. Sick stuff is scary IMO, but psychological things works too^^
