Scary films, games, and happenings...

Hi! I am making a sci-fi/horror game and I need some tips / answers from you what you think is SCARY! In this I mean in horror games / movies but even situations, monsters, persons or things youre scared of doing / happening to you.

I already have something:

1:Human Experimentations - Like in tha Alien Movies. Tottaly freaked me out when I saw Alien 4. This is something that IS scary, therefore I will be using this theme in my sci-fi/horror game!

But now post what you think is scary!
Either in Movies, Games, Situations, People etc..

//I need to know what is SCARY in general :) Thank You ~9robin3

Communism.

But for a game, the scariest thing is loosing. For example, in the old Resident Evil games, you couldn't save very often and you could die quite easily. Dying in a game like that where you can't save often makes you to loose lot of progress and that's scary.

Ok thank you! But Please better ideas than "loosing" if you knwo what I mean. Not the game system, it doesn't count. And loosing is the game system.. :)

But ofcourse I could make so that you cant save so often. Not too late to change that!

-Clowns
-People with blank faces (as in: no eyes, nose, mouth, just smooth)
-Blood stains shaped like hands/ bloody footprints
-Screeching door sound
-Things jumping at you from the darkness
- Winnie the pooh (it's evil, I tell you)

scary things:

- loosing (as in loosing the bowels so have the main character crap himself in public)
- people with blackfaces (golliwogs)
- screeching sound (high pitched, constant, annoying)
- crowns

I still do think laboratories in films like Allien 4 is very horrifying. That is the scariest film I hav ever seen, its sick :(

I actually agree with vgvgf, though even moreso is when you're working on some coursework or something in a strange application you've never used before and the system crashes. Generally if it's a new system I haven't found the save function yet, or are so busy trying to learn the commands that I forget to save. That is pretty scary, the moment between the screen closing and the "Windows has encountered an error and has had to close" popup. And then the thought of "when did I last save?"

Every time I go out the door I get scared that I forgot something. It doesn't happen often but I'm convinced that when it does happen, it will end in the worst possible scenario. I'm seriously getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

this happens to me every morning when i leave for school. EVERY MORNING. i'm also terrified that i'm always going to miss the bus even thought i haven't in almost a year :s

Also, as far as phobias go, I legitimately think I have trypophobia. It's a fear of clusters of holes. Lotus pods? Pomegranates? I am literally afraid to look at these thing, becaue the thought of them terrifie me and make me want to throw up.

The one thing that has scared me recently is a piece of fiction known as the slenderman. Google it for more info, because there is no way in hell I'm bringing that stuff back onto my screen, at least not willingly. By the way, the best of the slenderman stuff is a series of youtube videos in the channel marblehornets or something like that.

I haven't checked on Marble Hornets in a while but I stopped when totheark started getting involved and I didn't know what the hell was going on anymore

It's pretty cool how he's sort of spewed into this internet urban legend from a few simple photoshop manipulations and some imagination, though!

The worst part is that my friends were watching the stuff at night in the student lounge at college, with the lights off. I couldn't sleep that night...

The insinuation that something in the scenery that appears to be quite common, was never there before.

E.g. In my game, Greigh Manor, The house is riddled with suits of armor, some that move around the room if you leave it and come back in. I then included a few diary entries of different people, all with evidence that there were never any Suits of armor in there in the first place.

Another thing that's great for horror are interactive windows. You don't appreciate the shock value that can be acheived by looking through a window, and if you look for so long, a mutilated corpse slowly floats by close to the window.

Pillars are great things really. Nothing shits me up like walking down a long pillar filled corridor, and as I walk past two pillars, there's something inbetween them, but by the time you've walked past it, it's gone, you go back and it's not there.

Ceiling crawlers, like from Legend of Zelda. These things used to scare the shit out of me. Including something like this would be a good idea, something that drops down from the roof to try to grab the player, then when killed, splits into three, all of them could regenerate into a full one.

This is really great for a horror game :)

Also some bloody knifes lying on the floor would be nice :P
