SAU stands forprite and [A]rchive tility. SAU allows you to steal assets from commerical games for use in your project, if you dont care about legal issues or can get away with it. As a project, SAU targets mostly games with rich and quality assets, which can still be reused. SAU wont target Mario or Disney games, due to highly customized stylistics of their content.
SAU was started by me, SNV, to help homebrew community with high-quality game assets, as I'm tired of your rubbish amateur art. If you cant do pixel art or produce high quality sound effects, then please dont, as you'll create crap. Do what you can do best, like coding catchy gameplay or writing a good story. And remember - pros too reuse sprites[1].
The second goal of SAU project is to provide open source reference to game file formats. Modding scene in general is opossed to releasing any source code. Hope SAU will make greedy retards angry.
Our thanks should go to HexRays for their disassembler and Sp0Raw for presenting it to general public free of charge. Without them graphic formats of Stonekeep, Majesty and Divine Divinty wouldn't be here. Other generous people have published format specs and credited in respective fmt_*.c files. P2P networks were invaluable for purposes of obtaining free game copies, kudos to all people who share.
Have a nice day.
