Saori's Corner

Uhm, hello everyone. I'm Saori and I'm 17 years old. I really enjoy drawing as a hobby and my style's very generic with most anime drawers. I really strive to reach professional level but it's so far away. Must work hard > <;

Some of these are really old so to alleviate confusion, I guess it's best to post from new to old, right?

A request someone asked from me. I've never drawn a cravat before. Aaah, it's harder than I thought. Mm... This is kind of why I rarely draw men xD;;;

I've been feeling rather flooded lately so I just needed to draw something for the sake of drawing and this rather random horned girl lineart came from it. Hahaha, it's hard to see though. I kind of feel a bit too lazy to color it though TT  u  TT

I really enjoy making expression sheets for fun. Some of the expressions here do bother me though...

...I need to work on background xD;;; *fails*

Fanart of my favorite anime. My images tend to look really glowy and shoujo-ish when I do group pictures >:

Dress spheres for an RP I used to go to. This is Cylene and from right to left; White Mage, Lady Luck, Thief.

I have more but I think I've posted too many images already. Sorry @  ___  @;

Great stuff, I wasn't expecting this. Do you have anything that's not in the anime style? A lot of good artists can get seriously trapped if it's the only style they work in.

as mentioned above, good stuff but lets get you out of the anime trap. You do it well though i'll grant you that. nice indeed. (nice to meet you btw i'm the resident bitch, as is mr missingno. above.)

No you're not. We have plenty of those. You're just a rude person in-general!

I think this stuff is really quite good! The first two pieces stuck me especially(probably because I enjoy sketches more than finished pieces, for some reason!). The expression sheet is quite nice. Things such as that would make excellent facesets. The next two after that are tad... eh. I mean, they're certainly not bad, but bright anime shoujo-esque things usually aren't my style. But they're still quite good. The last I like more than the previous two(most likely from the lack of shading, or whatever), but the Lady Luck Cylene seems a little... well, her breasts are a bit off(as you probably already knew).

The black&white picture I would say is definitely the best of the bunch. It still has a distinct anime feel, but in a good way. It's not totally generic, or somesuch, and I probably would have construed the shoulder thing as more of a perspective thing, than a fuck-up if you hadn't mentioned it to be so.

and calling me rude makes you sweet and charming.

btw sao-hunny what do u use to render your work, photoshop? (that's the common one i guess. I'm still trying to find a master or atleast user of corel painter. I went to demo their software but the damn download on their official website is corupted. great customer service 9_9)

... [/tangent]

any who nice to meet you.

i really like the line weight on the very top drawing, its fun to draw with ink and use varying line thicknesses to give a simple drawing substance.

but yeah, get out of the anime trap, try new things, draw from life, study basic anatomy, blah blah etc.

on that monochrome pic, the way it pulls your eye to the face and hair, makes the HUGE shoulder less noticeable unless youre looking for something to critique, most ppl would look at it and just say, hmm, nice drawing, but you know, and i know, and anyone who's more observational than the average fan boy will know. little things here and there need work, and again, get out of the anime trap

I was really expecting someone to comment on that. I haven't taken a good look at that image for a while and when I saw the Lady Luck one, I noticed her chest looks like a man's. Hahaha, it lacks a bit of lines on the bottom. I guess I just didn't want them to look too big but in doing so, they look flat. Will keep that in mind in the future.

I use both, actually. When my Photoshop CD wouldn't install in this computer, I just used Painter mostly and I got pretty used to it. Painter's a really nice program since it has more natural strokes than Photoshop. On the other hand, Photoshop manages to make smoother images and lines.

Also, d-don't fight... > <;

<3 painter. Got a good site for tutorials?

Uhm, I don't really use tutorials xD;
I think it's much better to be hands-on and just look around the program :3

Sorry about that, I somehow missed your post *hits self on the head*

Hmm, well I guess you have a point but it's just that I really enjoy drawing what I draw > u <
I'm not really drawing to please others, I draw just because I like drawing. In a way, I don't think I'd be happy drawing images that border more on realism and painting > <;

Your works here are better than in rrr :)

Nessiaaaaaah~ Someone gave me the link to here too. Hahaha. It seems I've been joining a lot of game forums lately TT  u TT
Most of the images in RRR were old images so I guess that's why. But then again, the only really new image here is the sketch with the cravat and the other lineart. Everything else was hyperlinked in RRR, I think > u <

I just finished The World Ends With You last night. Because of that, I wanted to try out Nomura's style. He drew waists sooo small for the game though. I made hers bigger since I didn't want it to look snapabble. Nothing really, just something made for fun~ Hahahaha, I see tons of anatomical errors though, but let's just cover it up with "that's the style" xD

When the anime style is done badly, it's terrible, but when it's done well, I like it quite a bit. And you're very good. You have the delicate implied lines of the face down pat, and I think your most interesting parts are the hair: the direction and amount of detail (not too much, not too little), is very nice. There is a lot of implied movement in the works here which is a staple in this style, so you've done well.

A lot of people here are very anti-anime-style, but I can appreciate it when it's done nicely. Since you noted above that you tried to do realism and failed to part from the anime-look, however, tells me that you should experiment with other styles, to round out your artistic skills more. It's true that drawing in that manga style can become like a habit that's hard to shake.

Focusing on realism or one of the wildly varying styles of American or Western comic artists for a short time would help you, I think--not in this style, you have it down pat, but as an artist in general.

I'm not sure what country you're from, but unless it's Japan, you'll need to wildly stray from the anime style if you're going to art school, because I haven't met an art teacher yet that likes seeing their students draw that way. In fact, they tend to grade you down for it. I'm not really sure why, I think they're mostly being jerks, but this is just based on my prior knowledge :P

Thank you very much for your words Venetia > u <
I do see where you're coming from and I guess it does help to broaden one's horizons but right now, I'd rather improve this style for the future. I'm planning to be either an animator or part of the gaming industry in the future and that's pretty much my dream. After my studies I'll be flying back to Japan to work there. I've lived in Asia my whole life and the universities here aren't as strict as the western ones, as I gather. Probably why I don't really want to let go of the style I currently have > <;

Btw Sao, if you want to toy with nomura's styles i have just one thing to say: Read Japanese fashion magazines. Its like.. all there, he is SUCH a whore for trendiness >>

and as for Twewy, try a vector program like illustrator lol (Vector is just fun in general once u get to know it, i absolutly love illustrator)

Haha, it was more of a one time thing, actually. Since I just finished the game, I was on a hype and wanted to draw something related > u <
I don't plan on using his style :3

Sorry for the "i hate animu" bitches here but i guess you´re the best artist i´ve seen in this forums. Your work looks really polished and somehow professional, and i really like your style. Special thumbs up for the expression sheet, it´s lovely :)
