Sandman's Items

I just discovered pixel art, so i decided to try and make some item icons ... Hopefully here I'll get some advices on how to improve my drawing. For start I made two golden goblets, since they seemed easy to draw. I know i suck at shading and choosing color palettes, and i know i shouldn't use black for outlining, but those are my first 'masterpieces' but i hope you'll help me with some advices. But, enough talk ... here are the pics:

The first goblet was made in Macromedia Fireworks 8, and second in Adobe Photoshop CS2.

The Mage staff thing is also PS work, made in sudden wave of inspiration.

Btw, you are free to use them in your game if you like. No credit needed.

thanks...  any advice on how to improve my drawing and shading? i know it should be just practice, practice and practice but please tell me if there's any errors or something so I don't do it wrong the next time .... thx

Well, the biggest problem I see is your very dark outline colour. It should be maybe one palette shade darker than the fill, with adjustments based on shadow. In addition, it would make them look much shinier if you put more emphasis on the light than the shadow; it's not rare to see a pure white reflection on something shiny. So scale back the shadows a little and brighten up the reflections. I've been wondering if the shading should be less gradual and more of an abrupt fill, but I'll have to wait and see how the second draft looks to see if it's enough.
